"Can a DOG be an OBESE?"

I think my adult dog 'Putot'is getting fatter lately. She does like having food with rice. Whenever I carry her, I had noticed how heavy she is. I am not sure if she needs to lessen her food intake. "Does a dog need to keep a balanced diet?" "Can a dog experience heart attack?"

Yes to both your questions. Dogs should be on a meat diet only, not rice or other grains.

I think I need to consider this. I need to have her a balanced diet. She is quite an old dog now.

That's what I am telling my mother about it. We started to lessen the dog food for her. Coco the puppy is having calcium intake because of his weaker bones.

@LadyDuck That's a good idea. It would let her play with it, too.

@Shavkat Give him some bones to chew, not small bones because they are dangerous, give him a big bone. Too much food is not good, do not give him too much rice.

Preiti was obese but now she has slimmed down a lot. As you now she stops eating for days until I give her a drip and then gets back to eating again.

Yes a dog is just like anybody else. A dog can get fat. My largest dog had surgery on both of her knees. She gained weight. The Vet said that she must get that fat off those repaired knees. I found dog food that has less calories in it and now she is slimmer and will live a longer, better life.

@sallypup my daughters best friends dog is getting older but she is so fat that she has a hard time walking. I know they love her but overfeeding here that much is a bit sad.

That's quite a difficult situation for the dog to experience this. I think it is best to consider their health. Did your dog recover fast?

@Shavkat The Veterinarian put Leah dog on pain killers and antibiotics for a couple of weeks. It took over a month for her to start to heal. We had to keep her quiet as we could but before the surgery she was in pain, too. This at least was healing pain.

First try more exercise, but as dogs get older they won't be as active and you need to scale their caloric intake back accordingly...

My dog needs to lose weight too. It bothers me because I want her to live a long life. I'm trying to feed her a little less, and get her a little more exercise.

My mother-in-law had a dog that was obese, and she didn't manage to change it. Our own dog doesn't have that problem. He eats quite a lot, but his weight stays the same (we know that because the vet writes down the weight every year when our dog gets his check-up)

yes dogs can get obese. especially if they get spayed/neutered. or fed food from the table. or are not taken out daily to walk and run for an hour or two. thier food can also make them fat, if all it does is make them hungry again in an hour.

@Shavkat Yes animals can be obese. Sophie has been fat and then lost weight and fat again. She is my cat but she can also get fat. When I had my dog and cat that I had before Sophie I fed them together and they both were fat and I did not want to do that to Sophie but I did. I only feed her cat food and sometimes I guess i feed too much. I keep telling her we can run around the apartment or walk together but she does not answer.

Yes, a dog can struggle with these things. It would be a good idea to consult a vet on the matter. They will likely give you some recommendations on foods to help your dog trim down to a healthier weight.

Yes dogs can be obese too. Always take time to play with your dogs or give her an activity that would make her move like running or walking and treat her with fruits or veggies.

@geenwood88 That's nice. I had noticed that my little puppy likes it. I do think that we need to remove the apple's seeds since it is poisonous.

@Shavkat I treat my dogs with apples after a great activity but I always remove the seeds because it's harmful to them.

Yes they can get unhealthily fat like us. When that happens you should alow him to exercise. Dogs love to walk and they should not be sedentary at all since that is what causes them to be fat. When the dogs become slow and sedentary then it just means he's not on the healthy side of things anymore.

Putot is my late father's pet. He used to walk her every morning. Since I was so busy working, I don't have the time to do it for her. Thus, I need to fix my schedule. Now, I can able to walk with her in the morning.
