It seems Australian horses and cows are more dangerous than our crocodiles and snakes

I live in Western Australia and often encounter comments about our deadly creatures. Everyone knows about, and is fearful of, our snakes, spiders and crocodiles. Mostly I try to reassure them that some of what they’ve heard isn’t quite right. But sometimes I think it’s good that people will be too scared to visit our wonderful country and we’ll have it all to ourselves.
I found a chart today which shows that fears about venomous creatures are over-stressed. Worldwide, over 700,000 people are killed each year by mosquitoes while snakes account for about 110,000 deaths. The statistics for deaths by animals in Australia are very interesting and probably not what you'd imagine.
In fact, between 2008 and 2017, accidents involving horses, cows and animal transport accounted for 77 deaths. This was the highest number of deaths for any group.
I’ll list the other figures:
Other mammals - 60 deaths
Hornets, wasps and bees - 27
Marine animals including sharks - 26.
Snakes and lizards – 23
Dogs – 22
Crocodiles – 17
So come on down under and enjoy a holiday in a sunshine.
The photo is of another blue-tongue lizard which turned up near the front door yesterday. They are also called bobtails or sleepy lizards. I put up a photo of one a while ago but notice how this one blends so well with the gravel of our driveway.

People dont realize how dangerous those big lovable animals are. They can hurt you fast without meaning too.

@wolfgirl569 A friend of ours posted his own photo of FB. His horse reared, tipped him off then trod on his head. Luckily he was wearing a helmet.

The dark scares me otherwise nothing lol so if I ever get a chance to visit Australia I will be jumping to go! That is shocking about mosquitos. I would assume most are in countries where there aren't vaccines etc. I know standing water in puddles and things breeds mosquitos that carry malaria. That lizard is gorgeous but yes if it hadn't had it's big ugly tounge out then you wouldn't have noticed it as easily.

@JudyEv There are a few rare cases of West Nile virus here but that's it. Now it is believed that they may be transmitting Lyme disease. I just saw a video on Facebook this morning that was why people think Australia is scary and it showed snakes curled up in fridges and drawers etc, lizards and snakes and huge spiders in homes. It reminded me of your post but wouldn't keep me away.

That blue tongue really scares me. Nothing is more harmful to a human than another human.
Mosquitoes are a big killer in our country. Each year we have so many cases and deaths due to Dengue and malaria.

@arunima25 That would be good but I don't think they are never going to be endangered.

I understand very well of people misunderstanding things that go on in a country. We have people saying they do not want to come here because they think it is dangerous but they are wrong. We live our lives and celebrate our holidays and we enjoy having tourists come visit us. We have so much to see here. It is sad that people misunderstand like in your country and in mine.

Mosquitoes are number one and humans come second so we're a pretty dangerous species too.

Mosquitoes are the cause of a lot of deaths here in the Philippines. With snakes, they can be avoided, so as not to be bitten. But not the mosquitoes, because they are tiny and you don't know , while sleeping they already have bitten you and gave you the dangerous dengue or malaria.

Yeah, but I'll take my chances with mosquitoes. I can spray on repellent for those. I ain't getting within a mile of a snake if I can help it!
