I Need Help From an Artistic Eye

I could really use some help with this problem I am having and would appreciate any and all suggestions. This is my fireplace that came with the house we bought, I hate it!! It is a concrete fireplace which has been painted red. I would really like to paint it and make it look better but just can't decide what to do with it. The concrete has the little air bubble holes in it so it is not smooth by any means. I would love to put a wood mantel on the top to set my son's ashes and angels on but not quite sure how I would go about that. Then there is the questions of colors to paint it to make it look better. We will be getting glass doors to put on the front which will also change the look. What colors would you paint it or what would you do if this was your mess to change?? I need help with it.

That's a tough one, given that it's cement. I reckon they went for the "brick" look. I'd like a darker brown, but it might darken the room too much.

I know, I sit here day after day trying to figure out colors that would work but I hate it. If I could I would tear it out and fill in the wall. We live in Texas, I don't need a fireplace lol. I have thought about some brown as well, I have a very high ceiling in the living room so it is very open so maybe the brown wouldn't look so bad. Should I do a two tone on it, think that would look better? This is the wall opposite of the fireplace just to show you how high the ceiling is.

@sallypup Haha, we haven't had to yet, not quite sure how to get up there to do that if one burns out. I told my grandson if they do the living room will just get darker and darker lol

Fireplace facade. Image is not mine.
Hmmm... is that a facade that can be removed? If so, you could always find a different type of facade to put there... something more to your liking. Maybe something like this one (without the columns). It would showcase your son's urn and the statuettes of angels you have there now.

Ooooh, that is pretty, I could live with that one and your right, my sons ashes and angels would look better on this one. Unfortunately this one is concrete and looks to be part of the wall. Maybe I will look into seeing if it would be possible to remove this one and replace it with another. Thank you Daddy Evil for that great thought

@cintol I saw where you said the fireplace facade is concrete, but wasn't sure if it was actually a part of the fireplace. (I've seen a lot of fireplaces that had a decorative front (the facade) that could be removed and another type put in its place. The fireplace in the last house I had built was like that. The builder had planned on putting in a facade that was polished brass with delicate looking doors on it. My wife (at the time) and I didn't like that. We asked if he had any other facades we could choose from. We ended up getting one that looked just like the brick our home was built with. We thought it looked so much nicer than the brass one.) If you can't change the facade, then I think pony's (TheHorse) suggestion about painting it a dark brown would look the best (would go best with the rest of your living room *as far as we can see your living room* ). Whatever you finally do, please do let us know and show a pic of it "remade", if you would.

@DaddyEvil I wish the front of this one would come off so I could just cover it with something else, that would be sweet. Do they make hollow covers that might fit over this entire thing and make a whole new look? I don't blame you, I am not a big fan of brass so wouldn't want something like that. I just want something simple with a wooden mantle on it that is a little wider for my sons things. Yes, I have thought about the darker brown or shades of brown and get rid of the ugly grey they have for the hearth, I just think it is ugly. I would also like to get rid of this ugly floor, I hate the darker wood they have in here and would rather have tile down. It will take me a while to get it all done but I will be sure to take a pic and display it for you when I am done.

What you choose should blend with the rest of the decor. Not knowing what it is difficult to suggest.

@cintol I had a look. That fire place would look perfect if you put a self coloured beige carpet. That carpet is the one according to me spoils he show. I like your fire place.

Some actually say it doesn't look bad with the decor but I just don't like red. There is a picture of the living room in the conversation with Dianne.

Given that it has a southwestern look and style I might go with more of a turquoise maybe with black trim, but I didn't see what color your sofa is.

@cintol Then maybe the more orange tone might be better but I love blue with brown. Though you could paint the bottom just a shade darker or lighter than the wall and paint the mantle a contrast color.

@BelleStarr Thats a good idea, I am wishing the mantle was a little wider as it is hard to put things on it without making it look over crowded. DE had mentioned putting a facade over the whole fireplace. I have looked into them to see what will be best. I would really like to take this one out but it is concrete and attached to the wall!

Its more of a rawhide color and a sectional, the living room is mostly browns

From watching HGTV, I would sand it and paint it white to go with the white trim I see in your room. I do love the shape and design. Are those draperies on either side?

@cintol I thought it had air bubbles. Even so, a coat of fresh white paint may perk it up. It's so hard to tell without seeing your entire room.

@DianneN Yes, since its concrete it has the little divets in it, I put a pic on The Horse comment of the wall opposite of it to show how high the ceilings are.

Yes, I have lace with brown curtains on both sides of it, just one of the brown drapes is down today. White wouldn't be bad, thats a good idea, don't know that I can sand concrete though.

If you don't like it, then paint it the same color as the wall to minimize the visual impact

@ledante I wouldn't really mind if it drew attention to the fireplace if it looked better. The more I consider it, I am thinking about getting a wood mantle for it. I think then it would make it easier to find the colors it needs to make it look better.

@cintol certainly a wooden mantle would class it up a bit, but this will still draw attention to the fireplace...

I don't know if it would look very good all white with the color of the room but some white with another color in there to offset would look good.

If you are not going to use it you could go white. But if it is going to be used brown would probably be the best.

I never thought about that, the soot and smoke could turn it if it was white. Good point I know I don't want to use it but my husband wants too, he loves fireplaces, I don't like the smell they put in furniture and clothes. Thanks Eva

Thats a good idea, I like those colors. I can watch some YouTube videos to see how that would be done. I wish there was an app that I could put my fireplace on and paint it different ways to see what it would look like.

Since it has a black inset I would do a medium brown and the bottom that is gray I would do a darker brown. Right now you have 3 colors going on that do not complement each other.

Exactly, I don't know why anyone would have painted it red and gray to begin with. My husband likes it so that tells me right away that its ugly not to mention my first impression was ugly as well lol. Browns are a good idea too.
