One thing I look forward to each summer is seeing our native pohutukawa trees in full bloom. The tree is known as the New Zealand Christmas tree as it flowers in December, our summer, and is around it's best at Christmas. It's really a coastal tree, but these days can be found inland if the conditions are right.
This year the trees throughout the country are an even more vibrant colour than usual. Experts have put this down to the alternate rain and warm weather we've been having, creating the right soil conditions for it.
The red flowers certainly add a festive atmosphere to the summer.
This photo is not mine, I found it on pixabay.

The trees in the photo are notable for branching very near the base. Is this typical of this species?
