Gross Smoothie

I just dumped the healthy smoothie I made down the drain. I tried to drink it but after two sips, I gagged. Gross is an understatement. I love smoothies as they allow me to get a lot of nutrients in and using fresh frozen ingredients, they can be like a milkshake.
I followed a recipe on a blog that swore the nutrients and taste would have me hooked on it daily and not just once, but twice, for morning and lunch. I can lose weight, get all my vitamins and minerals and feel good or add more things to maintain and just receive a healthy boost.
Yea, I see why I would lose. I can't drink it. I'll toss it back up if I force it.
I now have four more bags prepped that will waste. I might be able to pull the banana off and use in a future drink but the celery, ginger, beats etc will go in the trash.
Back to my tried and liked blueberry banana or banana with soy "peanut" butter along with spinach leaves, hemp hearts, yogurt and almond milk topped with a Woman's one-a-day and gummy vitamin D's.
Do you like healthy smoothies? How do you prepare yours?

I wonder what all went into that smoothie? What ingredient(s) do you think made it "gross"? I know what my husband would do . . . he'd dump a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream in it . We like smoothies but I haven't made it since the hot weather left. Strawberries are a must - blueberries are great if we have them on hand, banana, spinach, chia seeds, vanilla or plain greek yogurt, a touch of honey - all in a blender.

@noni1959 Sometimes certain ingredients do have a stronger taste when pulverized for a smoothie. I love fresh ginger, but powdered ginger can sometimes be weird - I recently used a roasted carrot recipe and I am certain the powdered ginger ruined it. I'll have to add nut butter protein. I forgot to mention we sometimes put avocado in too!

The only things I can think of that gave it a horrid taste was too much fresh ginger, beets or the celery. I almost always use bananas even when making blueberry smoothies. I use yogurt and chia seeds too. Sometimes I add some nut butter or something different.

I lived on smoothies for many months, some years back, when I was recovering from a digestive problem.
I'm surprised that you weren't able to make the smoothies taste also good besides being nutritious. I can make any smoothie taste good bur one must know how to mix them together. You don't have to put everything in the same smoothie.
Celery, apple and a bit of ginger will taste amazing'
Beats, celery and apple will also taste good. Don't overdo it on the ginger. I wouldn't throw anything out. I would just remix them.
Or you can always use the vegetables in a salad.

I'm wondering if it was the ginger. I've used Ginger before but the store bought that wasn't fresh. This time I grated fresh and put in a tsp. maybe I can try to remove some from the other bags I froze and try it one more time. If that doesn't work, then it has to be the beets or celery.

It did mine too but I decided to go outside my box and try some new healthy recipes. I think I need to stick to my tried and loved ones. A handful of spinach is good and you can't taste it. An avocado mixed in some flavors makes it creamy and you can't taste it either.

Sorry that you didn't like that smoothie....but I don't think I'd like one with those ingredients either! I used to make a good green smoothie with spinach, blueberries, almond milk, and a little stevia. Sometimes adding either peanut butter or unsweetened chocolate.

@MommyOfEli2013 I use it in all my flavors and so far I don't taste the spinach. I think tomorrow I'll make a chocolate banana smoothie for breakfast.

@noni1959 That is good to hear! spinach is great to add because the chocolate and peanut butter overpower the taste (least to me).

I couldn't do the all veggie or all green smoothies either. Some of those veggies just don't taste good together or come out in the weird brownish color which isn't appealing at all. I typically will just add in spinach or kale to my smoothies with chia or flax seeds sometimes a nut butter ( I prefer almond) and I get plenty of vitamins from the veggies mixed in with the good taste of the fruit I use.

You may want to try fresh liquid juices for your smoothie. Frozen is great too but combined with organic herbs or roots may lack flavor or be a bit bitter. You have to remember frozen treats retain 35% water upon formation. Ive tried an healthy green smoothie for the first time 2 months ago with oregano , watercress, romaine, cucumber, etc. And I needed more veggies so the first time was gruesome the acidity from the greens I felt instantly but the taste' get better overtime- An healthy smoothie is meant to be consumed even if its uneasy at first. Trial and error.
