I’ve had a busy, busy weekend.
My dinner party for my brother and his wife was fun on Friday, and more so, because my nephew decided to attend. He took an Uber afterwards to Miami and is flying back home to New York City this very minute.
Saturday my husband and I spent the day shopping in Palm Beach where we had lunch on the porch of a hotel. We were invited to a dinner at our dear friends’ beautiful new house. It was fabulous!
Sunday afternoon, we went boating with my brother and his wife. We were excited to pass our condo and see how much prettier it looked from the Intercostal. . The owner of the boat took us through a short passage for a ride on the ocean. I found the ocean rough and boring compared to all the activity on the Intercostal. I also felt seasick from the choppy water, but all was good.
Now my brother and husband want to buy a boat. I think it’s foolish for six months a year, not to mention the upkeep and expense, and the fact that they both will need lessons and a boating license.
Do you own a boat?

My husband has three boats, two bass boats and a bigger boat. My brother has a big boat that he keep on Lake Lanier near Atlanta. We used to go down the Connecticut River with him over to Long Island for lunch when he lived in Connecticut.

@DianneN It was a lot of fun but now with Al's Parkinson's he can't go boating alone, one of the boys has to go with him except maybe when we are down at the lake house.

@BelleStarr I think it would be much smarter for my husband and brother, none of them sailors or boaters, if they rent a boat rather then buy one. The one they were looking at costs as much as a small house in CT. Ridiculous. And then the marina fees are a fortune. We rented a fishing boat last year when our son and grandson came down and will do so again if they come again. Good enough. We have a few friends down here who own sailboats and cabin cruisers, and one has a small yacht. Even better. lol

You took me to a memory of that shikara ride in Kashmir. We were a group and each family went on different shikaras. It was on Dal Lake we were to take a long ride on that lake but the two of us got back pretty fast . It is only later we came to know that we were cheated by that boatman. He cut short the trip about which we were ignorant.

@DianneN Getting back to him was not possible as they normally vanish into thin air

I did have a row boat that fit six people comfortably at one time. We bought it second hand when we used to go camping. We had lots of fun with it. Does that count?

@DianneN One can do a lot more with a big boat. It was fun to take the kids for a ride.

@1hopefulman I’m sure it was thrilling for your kids. Renting a big boat is what we should do. Our grandson loves fishing from them. Owning one for us is what I call ridiculous.

Yes, sort of..it really belongs to my ex..but it is moored in the boat slip down here. The guy is so dumb he never uses it. He hasn't had it out in years.

@DianneN don't think they would be interested in a small fishing boat..It wouldn't be appropriate for that kind of water.

@snowy22315 Oh, no. They want a big, shiny, new, costly, boat that they won't ever be able to pilot or whatever it's called. It would be parked or moored in a boat slip forever.

Nope and I don't think we'll ever own one.
Guys, it seems that they want to start a new hobby.

That is what happens when you get a man near water and give him a ride in a boat.

@playertwo It was great until I got sick. The fish are massive in size.

No, I don't and even if I could afford one, just too much water for me.

No nobody in our family has a boat. When I was a kid, my dad had a little boat for awhile. It was the only thing I ever saw my mom get mad at him about -- he bought it without asking her! And then the one and only time she went out in it, she got horribly ill with what the doctor thought was an allergy to the lake algae. The boat did not last long!

I also dislike the ocean, the Intercostal is a lot more interesting. My husband wanted to buy a boat when we lived in Monte-Carlo. I am glad that I arrived to convince him not to buy one. Here a boat is not interesting, you can only use it a few months a year on the lake.

Boating is like a hobby. Think of it that way.

Not that rich ever to own a boat. But a friend of mine bought one for her 5 yr partner since he wanted it as a proof of her love. THAT and a brand new 4WD. Once the paperwork was OK (she paid for the whole lot), he said he would love to go to Thailand for a trip (a month holiday). She never saw his face again. She found out he also incurred some sort of debts in her name, about $200,000. A beautiful love story, right? (any mentioning of a boat, always made me think of my friend and that loving partner of her.)
