we say/call them softdrink here, but yes, there have been times people use 'coke' as the generic name, just like 'colgate' for toothpaste.

@noni1959 a lot of stuff here became generic names because they were the only brand available

As a kid, it was always pop. And then as a teen, the word chanced to soda!! More sophisticated I guess lol!!

I never really thought about it, I guess a soda....I usually just call them by their names though lol.
