I am back from my holiday!

Hi everyone I hope that this post finds you well where ever you are? I came back from India last week and for around 24 hours our body clocks were all over the place. However not one to waste precious time we were both up in the wide awake club at 2AM and had done four loads of washing before the morning sun rose! How about that for efficiency. Unfortunately the holiday did not get off to a good start because 2 days before we were due to go I went to do something I have done like you probably and moved a chair. I got an excruciating pain in my back which also shot down my leg. You guessed it a prolapsed disc. I was in agony could not move my wife was trying to move me to sit on the chair. It was quite a comical scene as I was saying don't touch don't touch! Thankfully I had done my packing on New Years day so at least I was ready to go. On Thursday the disappointment on my wifes face was alarming to me as she so desperately wanted to go to India. I dosed myself up with codeine until I was practically off my face and we went. I must admit I was in two minds to cancel it. Fortunately my son in law took us to the airport so I did not have to lift the cases. The fun part was trying to get dressed in the morning. I could not lift my left leg I had to lift it manually. Not the start of a holiday I was anticipating but after around ten days the pain was bearable and I was able to stop taking the codeine. It is quite a shock coming back to such cold weather. It went from 36C (96.8 F ) right down to -2 C (28F). So we are feeling a tad cold at the moment. Unfortunately all my colleagues have rotten colds so I always keep a stock of medication in my draw and have been dishing out lemsips etc, making them drinks to keep them hydrated and taking up the slack while they are quarantined to the office. Gosh they do look rough but I do wish they would have stayed at home because I do not want to catch it.

Welcome home, Gary. So sorry you hurt your back just before your trip. Yes, I've done that, too, but we carry on. I'm sure you managed to enjoy yourself despite the pain and agony.

@DianneN Just the odd twinge but not taking any pain killers now. Funnily enough i have been doing some research at work on Pain relief especially in relation to degenerative changes in the elderly so I am perhaps I little ahead of getting control of the pain

hope you don't catch it, especially with your body adjusting to the change in climate. i have a relative who travels a lot and always comes home with a cough and cold.

Yes I think it is due to being in a confined space in the plane with lots of other people despite what they tell you about the air exchange on the planes so many people succumb to coughs and colds after flying,.

The flu is spreading here, I go out the least I can. I am sorry you were so much in pain Gary, prolapsed disc you said. I wonder if I am experiencing something similar. I am waiting that it heals by itself. I hope you enjoyed your vacation despite your problem. Surely you feel the cold coming back. Take care.

@garymarsh6 you did faced the pain quite bravely. But it would have lessened the enjoyment a bit.

You suffered for the first ten days of your holidays? That's horrible. What were you able to do at all? Did you stay in one place or travel around?

We stayed for 2-3 nights in places but it was touring around visiting all kinds of places. Initially I just grinned and bared it although it was quite challenging walking especially up stairs as I had to lift my leg so took longer than it should have done to get in and out of the car. I had to sit on the left hand side because I could not lift my leg in on the right hand side of the car! I think swimming helped a lot thankfully as it took the weight off the compression but of course when you come out of the water it all comes back!

@garymarsh6 Do you still suffer from the slipped disc? Doesn't one have surgery when a disc slips?

@MALUSE NO it just has to rehydrate as the fluid has usually oozed out causing the compression. I was drinking water till it came out of my ears!

Is that a sea beach in Madurai? Did you also go to Chennai and other places in TamilNadu?

@garymarsh6 Bummer. However if you are suffering a bad back and leg better do it in India rather than elsewhere, somewhere warm where you can swim.

What a shame that your holiday started off so badly but what wonderful luck that you were able to go at all! I hope you don't get the cold that your colleagues have. People should really stay home when they're not well.

Good to hear that you went ahead with the trip. What a time to get a prolapsed disc! Yes, the weather is hot and humid in India in most places - siva
