Do you appreciate your veterinarian?

Did you know that veterinarians have a higher suicide rate four time that of any other professional group? This is true in both Australia and the USA. I don’t know about other countries. Despite the fees they charge, Australian vets earn less than the average yearly income. However they can come under enormous pressure because people object to the fees being charged, particularly if the animal subsequently dies, or are unable to pay. They deal daily with loss and grief. Being animal-lovers themselves, there is an emotional stress dealing with wounded/abused/sick animals and, often, with their distraught owners. Many have a work/leisure ratio to their lives which is highly unbalanced and doesn’t make for good interpersonal relationships. They are expected to attend their clients at all hours of the day and night. Veterinarians can come under immense pressure from animal rights groups. Some owners too are very unreasonable and sometimes vicious if they think something has not been done correctly. They resort to social media to voice their complaints and far too many are willing to spread the word before sorting out the fact from the fiction. The link I’ve given describes a tragic incident which led to the suicide of one vet. The article goes on to say how several others were driven to leave their states after a hate campaign on the website. It’s a very sad state of affairs but I don’t know what the answer is. The photo is my pet sheep, Hercules, who has sadly passed on. He had an eye for the girls.
Veterinarians kill themselves at four times the rate of the general population -- that's twice as likely to commit suicide as dentists and other medical practitioners.

That's good. I'm sure most have the animal's interests at heart. It's awful to think some are hounded the way they are.

I dont see a link but that is sad to hear. I love my old vet the best but he has retired from large animals. But I like all that I have met at the new place. By having more than one vet there they are able to get days off also which I am sure is very helpful.

@wolfgirl569 That's for sure - and of course they know that too. But it's awful to think some are hounded by bullies.

@JudyEv It is. Some people expect miracles, and then you have those who want to complain that many things are cruel. Like tail docking and ear cropping. I know several vets around here that wont do those, especially the ears, because people were complaining.

I saw a story about this just a few days ago. I wonder if vets lose a larger percentage of their patients than physicians do, and that puts them under more stress. In any event, it's tragic.

That is so sad! I never would have thought about it but it really does make sense. They do not have an easy job. I am sure their insurance is shy high too so that would cut into their prices as well as having to pay workers and workman's comp etc. I love both the vets I have taken my animals to!

Being animal lovers they must feel for all their patients. It would be hard not to get involved. And then having to put animals down......

@shaggin That would have been a very hard job particularly at that age. It is hard not to get involved and then 'care too much' almost making it a huge wrench when they eventually die.

i saw a documentary 'bout such jest this past week. i can comprehend why they'd be prone to such. add what'cha wrote the 'mount 'f neglect'n abuse many see'n i'm quite certain that jest weighs that much heavier'n 'em. i'm jest glad we've finally a veterinarian that doesn't feel mustangs aint worth the trouble.

@JudyEv yes ma'am, knew such'd be a joke . the last vet i'd 'round these parts 'd not tend to my mustangs...'n when he did with one, he killed 'im. knew he'd a blockage 'n fed 'im alfalfa. the others he'd not e'en lemme unload off the trailer fer 'im to treat 'em. he'd eyeball 'em through the side panel 'n give a guess....

I think that people in general are far too quick to air their grievances, perceived or otherwise, on social media. They post before they think and by the time they may have calmed down and realised they were acting on emotions it's too late. The damage is done. Couple that with our love of animals and a perfect storm exists.

@JudyEv Yeah, sheep are nice!! And the word 'coward' is spot on. I bet many of those who take to social media with their perceived grievances haven't even tried to resolve it face to face because they're too afraid of a real confrontation.

It only takes one coward to take to the airwaves and all the other cowards out there start sticking the boot in too. I won't call them 'sheep'. It would be an insult to the species.

I should have been clearer. The girl in the photo isn't a vet but is an air traffic control officer from Singapore - the youngest ever. She was backpacking in our area and a couch-surfer so she stayed with us a few days.

This is a very interesting post. Yes, it is true that usually when one goes to the vet there are big problems with the animal. I never thought about that before but yes, it is likely horrible for the vet.

I was a bit surprised by that story - I thought the vets were more likely to get trouble from, for example, farmers who are told their herd will have to be wiped out due to some epidemic like foot and mouth or blue-tongue. But I giuessmost vets these days deal with small animals (and their owners).

That's just one story I guess. Some vets in Western Australia will only deal with small animals. They aren't interested in farm animals.

That is shocking and very sad. I do appreciate my vet practice although it hasn't always been an easy time for me and my pets. I had one dog fall onto a log many years ago and she needed stitches. After she came out of surgery she had a big lump where the wound was and the vet said it was scar tissue. Three years later the lump exploded and she had to go back into surgery. Turns out she had three chunks of wood in the wound which hadn't been removed. The dog was left with a heart problem which ultimately shortened her life. When I told the vet at the time that I thought it was unacceptable she shrugged her shoulders and said "it happens...". I stayed with that practice but now see a different vet. He is a very kind man and when I brought in my new rescue dog who was scared of men he sat down beside her and spoke to her until she was calm. He is so thorough too. It must be a very stressful career when there are so many different animals to treat and so much at stake.
