A splash photo

My husband is a keen photographer and has joined several online photo sites. Several of these have ‘challenges’ from time to time. A theme is given and a week later the moderators or a chosen member will give their verdict as to the photo that best fits the theme. The judging is of course very subjective and the challenge is meant to be a bit of fun. But you can’t help noticing sometimes that people will put up something that has nothing to do with the theme. One week the topic was ‘green’ but at least two photos put up for judging had no green whatsoever in them. A ‘garden’ theme included a photo of a dog on a beach. You do have to wonder about people sometimes. One group has gone crazy over ‘splash’ photos and there have been some very creative shots put up. Vince did this one which is not so much ‘splash’ as ‘pour’ but I liked it. Tomorrow I think he is going to try again but including a mirror in some way. I might need to come up with something creative again to help.

One person dropped a grapefruit into water but added the comment 'best to try this outside'.

That's true. Each person picks up ideas from the others and they share information so it's very beneficial.

@valmnz Be careful what you wish for! You'd have to do it over and over. I've just dropped a grape into water about 50 times (well, four actually but 50 sounds much more impressive).

He needs a bigger splash so now he's setting up in the lounge with towels all round to mop up any water. Luckily we don't have carpet.

I agree it's not quite splash, but it's still a cool picture :-) I have thought about joining some online photo sites but til now I've only managed to sign up and not added any photos or entered any competitions

@JudyEv Yes, I guess if you find a site with decent photographers, you'll get some good advice. I do take photos with some friends every now and then, that is also good practice

You should take the plunge and enter some photos. Vince has learnt a lot from putting up photos. You don't have to follow suggestions but sometimes they come up with good ideas and helpful advice.

It's more a 'drop' than a splash isn't it? He might try to make a bigger 'splash' later but I think he'll need to go outside. Someone in the group made a huge mess in their kitchen and suggested others should perhaps go out-of-doors to do their splash photos.

He did a great job with the splash photo. People do make me wonder at times when they go completely opposite from what they've been told.

I'm also a keen photographer but I don't really do 'arty' type of shots - I'm more of a documentary style photographer

But I think that even if you work with documentary photography and think that what you do is not very artistic, there is a lot of talent and art in the work you do. The concept of the artistic is involved.

Bokahs were all the rage at one time. That's the blurred round circles that appear when something isn't focussed. I'll add one here but it's not the best example. Reflections were all the rage for a while then mirror shots.

I really love this splash photo. I too am a photographer and post my work on different sites and also join challenges. I love it and since I live traveling, I can usually meet most challenges. I also enjoy supporting other photographers. I would love to see more of your husband's work.

A lot of the photos I put up here are his. I mostly say so if they are. Otherwise they are mine with occasional Wikipedia ones thrown in if I don't have something suitable. He has just set up a website called downunderimages.com but it's mostly photos of endurance horses.

That's right, I know what you're talking about because I'm on a page where that happens, on several occasions I've noticed it, and I've smiled for it. That photo of your husband who shares in this publication is in my opinion a great photo.
