On February 1st, I was celebrating my 60th birthday. I wanted to do something special for this birthday, and I thought at a cheap trip to Paris and London when I received in January a 50% discount offer during 24h for all trips booked on a French coach company, Ouibus. The trip from Paris to London and back was at 14.90 Euros ! Then I noticed that in England, National Express had also very cheap tickets in February from London to Dublin, and I bought a round trip for £36.
When I told in Calais to an inquisitorial custom officer that I had not a pound and was not intending to change any euro, she told me that I was needing pounds to book a hotel. No, I was not. Oh, yes, you need one, where will you sleep ? I would sleep in the bus to Dublin that I was taking at 6 pm. «Oh, Dublin...» She got confused, seemed lost in her thoughts, and asked me after a moment «Have you some family in France ?» Hmm, officer, I am French. She looked at my ID, said «Sorry», and gave it back to me. End of the screening process. Ireland has Euro and I did my shopping there ; maybe a tourist not spending a penny is not a good tourist for Britain, but I was not needing to change any money to cross UK...
All the tickets I bought were for night coaches, so I had not to pay for any hotel. However finding a place to wash and change of underwear and socks has not been easy, most of the time I did it in toilets for disabled people.
In Ireland, the Irish custom officer gave me back my ID with a «Thank you !» in French, and I received a very warm welcome, also in French, when asking my way to a police officer in Dublin. Every Irish I spoke to was very talkative and nice. At least, French are welcomed in Ireland.
My trip was a 6 days trip (To Paris-London-Dublin-London-Paris-to home), I had 150 Euros in cash with me, and spent only about 50. It is one of the cheapest trip I ever did, but you will see that I visited a lot of monuments and museums. I will give a summary of the first days of the travel in 3 parts : Paris, London and Dublin.
I left my city on the evening of Saturday Feb 2d with a bus scheduled to reach Paris at 6:15 am ; it arrived at 5:45 am at the new (for me) Paris-Bercy coach station (top right photo). It is cold and dirty, London Victoria coach station (bottom left) and Dublin-Busaras (bottom right) are way better.

Wow, you had a really cheap trip and covered a lot of miles! And a very happy belated birthday to you. The Irish are very friendly aren't they? We always tried to impress on the French that we were from Australia and not from England!

For Paris to London, it would be difficult to find cheaper than the 7.45 Euros I paid. But after I booked the round trip to Dublin I received a 25% discount offer from National Express. In fact the coach to Dublin had less than 20 passengers, I should have booked it in 2 times, I would have saved £4.50 on the way back.
The Irish are more talkative than English with strangers and very friendly. France has an old tradition of friendship and alliance with Ireland since the Middle-Age based on the fact that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. With the Brexit coming I think we can easily restore the Aulde Alliance with Scotland and Ireland.
Are you confessing that Australia is a virtual country? Have you visited the Natural History Museum in Dublin ? I enjoyed the 1900 look of the building and the showcases, and there is 1 showcase full of Australian animals.
Thank you for your wishes.

I completely forgot the crepes, I could have done it, I left only during the evening. I enjoyed the trip. I am hesitating between Bilbao and Rome for the international day of museums next May. If I go to Rome, I will stop a day in Milan, between 2 buses.

The bus took the Eurostar train in Calais on the way to London, which is not fun as we had to stay in the bus. On the way back it took a ferry, it is a lot more pleasant. The ferries to Ireland are really big, with 11 desks and cabins like ocean liners.

A happy belated birthday to you!!
What a frugal birthday trip . . . that's seriously smart to take night coaches to avoid having the expense of staying at a hotel - for me I don't know that the family would be agreeable to that . Were you able to sleep comfortably? Ohhhh, I'll have to read about the rest of your adventure !

Thank you. Very frugal, I have roofs to repair. But I really enjoyed it, and you will see that I managed to visit a lot of places during this little trip, except for my first day in London, because the weather was horrible. But on my way back it was sunny !
Between Paris and London it is difficult to sleep, because of the custom control at 2am, but the rest of the trip, the coaches were half empty, I had 2 seats for me and I slept well.

@topffer I've never been to Dublin. Years ago I had a week's holiday in Irelend with Irish friends, we intended to end our week in Dublin but we were having such a lovely time on the west coast that we never got there. Now you're making me think I should get on a coach!
