We All Know What Today Is

Today is our grandson’s birthday! He just turned 9 years old today, but we aren’t in New York City to celebrate with him. His other grandparents just left for a vacation to Rwanda, so they won’t be there to celebrate either. But he knows he’s well loved.
It is also a day of love for so many, Valentine’s Day. However, it can be such a lonely day, too, for those alone in the world. It can be sad for those who have no one to celebrate it with.
There also are naysayers who poo-poo the idea of Valentine’s Day. They consider it pure commercialism and refuse to participate.
To me, Valentine’s Day has become another day to celebrate our grandson’s birthday and to celebrate our love for each other. We began when I was just 19 years old and a university student and has continued throughout our long, happy marriage.
Sure, we go out for a fancy romantic dinner. Sure, I receive a piece of jewelry, a big box of chocolates to share, and an extra large bouquet of flowers. Perhaps that’s why hubs and I have been together for all these years. But, then again, we love each other year round and every day. We don’t need a special day to celebrate, but we do it because we love to. We are blessed with love.

My nieces birthday is today and that's the only thing we celebrate. =)

Happy Valentine's Day and of course Happy Birthday to your much-loved grandson. We don't do anything special on Valentine's Day, last year we went to dinner at the club but I didn't make reservations this year.

@kobesbuddy How exciting for your son-in-law to still have an interest in the game as an adult!!!!
My grandson is the team goalie and is in Pennsylvania for the weekend in tournaments. Last Sunday he played again in Madison Square Garden in NYC during a halftime show with the 10 and 11 year olds and tied the game. He was so proud!!!! So were we.

Valentine's day is special for me in a different way. I had that ghastly accident on February 14, 2006. (lol) Here in India it is slowly picking up but not as significant as it is for the Westerners.

I have a nice husband that will give me anything I want. So I get what I want when. I want it so we do not need a special day to celebrate our love we have been together for twenty seven years and married for nineteen years. We have know each other for fifty years.

That's lovely! I've been married much longer and am treated the same way every day. I do love dressing up and going out with my husband on Valentine's Day, since the day I met him. It's our extra special thing. He is the one who prefers to buy me my jewelry. Who am I to argue?

I like your thoughts on the holiday and I am happy that you have a happy marriage :-)
I think it's great that couples have a day to celebrate - though I just wish that the holiday-makers had consider the singles as well.
Oh well! I just celebrate singles day on 2/15 aka. half priced chocolates day. ;-)

Happy birthday to your Grandson! The day is beginning to get sunnier now. It has been chilly and windy, with rain with the recent Kona Low climate passing over our islands. I'm enjoying Valentine's Day and will watch Hallmark's special programming tonight.
