Were your schooldays a waste of time?

My schooldays were pretty much a waste of time but then I didn't do myself any favours and didn't try very hard. I left under a cloud in the middle of the school year with no qualifications (I'll tell you about it sometime).
There were times I regretted that but, after a while, I found a good job, a good woman and a good life. I'll be damned if I know how that happened to a no-good kid from the wrong side of the tracks but it did.
Yes, my schooldays were a waste of time but that didn't have any long-term effect on my life! ![](/Content/images/emotes/happy.gif)

There are dozens and dozens of self-made successes out there. As regards the men, perhaps they all met a good woman. ![](/Content/images/emotes/rasp.gif)
Seriously, an academic education doesn't suit everyone. I think it is wrong that the leaving (school) age is now so high. Here it's 17. There are a few options like going to a technical school or whatever.

@petatonicsca If these (almost) young adults are kept at school when they don't want to be there, they can be very disruptive to the rest of the class.

@JudyEv No kidding. Also, they won't feel good about themselves. Everyone needs to be able to do something that will be good for them as well as others. But I do think kids should be in school at least through middle school, and most kids through high school, just for basic common knowledge.

At least in Japan, once a student graduates middle school (grade 9) there are other options, such as apprentice, which functions like technical school. I have known kids who went on to apprentice to a bakery, a farm, (those were two of my "holiday foster kids"), auto mechanics and beautician.

@pjmurphy Not even better teaching methods could have helped me at the time. Since I have matured (a little at least!) I have tried to educate myself and I intend to keep learning!

I loved grade school, loved my crazy high school day, and even trudged through university. I grumbled a lot and sometimes fell into despair but I got through it all and I did not regret it. It all depends on what each individual feels like and it sounds like you did just fine without the education.

I loved school but a lot of what was taught, I had already learned from my parents or church. When I got to college, suddenly I found I had to really work hard. That was tough, finding out that study didn't always come easily.

Certainly going to college was a waste of time for me.

We were raised to value education a lot and nope it was never a waste of time. I wonder where I'll be if I wasn't educated at all?
Education is mandatory here and without a degree, you'll end up on the street or with a job that doesn't pay much. And you live only to eat.

Yes I think school is a waste of time and I have done a lot of research on what they were teaching us in school and found out that it wasn't even true. So I was just in school so my mom wouldn't get into trouble for me not being there.
