Day 39 Acts 20:1-12 Acts 20:1 And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them, and departed for to go into Macedonia. 2 And when he had gone over those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece, 3 And there abode three months. And when the Jews laid wait for him, as he was about to sail into Syria, he purposed to return through Macedonia. 4 And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus. 5 These going before tarried for us at Troas. 6 And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days. 7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. 8 And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. 9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. 10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. 11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed. 12 And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted. How many times have you fallen asleep in church? Either the sermon was long or you didn’t sleep well the night before, or you came from working a long shift direct to church and you found yourself asleep instead of paying attention to the sermon. I admit, I’ve done it. Paul was long winded. He had a lot to say to the disciples before he left them to continue his journey and a young man fell asleep in a window and fell to the ground three stories below. Paul took it in stride, went to take care of the boy, brought him back to life, and continued speaking after they had communion together. He spoke all night before continuing his journey. As Christians, I’m certain you’ve been in long services, and wondered when it would be over, or hoped it would continue because the Holy Spirit was working in the service and you didn’t pay attention to how long it went. Those services where the Holy Spirit has complete charge is electrifying. You don’t want to leave and you don’t want it to end. Yet, it ends at one point and you get on with your day rejoicing in what the Holy Spirit did in your midst. That’s how the disciples felt to have Paul speak to them the entire night. We are to long for the presence of the Holy Spirit to teach us, not only on Sunday morning, but every day. There should be an urgency to open the Word daily and let the Holy Spirit teach us what He wants us to know. Your prayer should be, Teach me Lord. I guarantee He will teach you and you will be blessed. You should go to church with an expectation of what the Holy Spirit will do in the service. When you do, God will bless your time with Him. Let’s pray: Father, teach me what You want me to know. Let me feel Your presence in the room when I open Your Word or when the pastor or priest opens Your Word. Open his mouth and speak through him the word You laid on his heart and I will listen and heed praising You for all You teach me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
