Tomorrow my son is going to have a music test, he needs to play 4 songs in his flute, including a Mozart one. I understand very little about music but he asked me to stay and listen just to check if he plays it well. He has had the higher grade of his class and his teacher is expecting him to play it well. Here music is taught in regular school now.
I don't play a instrument but I always wished to learn.
Do/Did you help your children when they are/were studying?
Do you play an instrument?

I do not have any children. I remember playing the flute when I was in elementary school. That was a long time ago, but it's been a tradition for many years. What I mean is that I can remember several generations of family before me having to play the flute.
I guess they think the flute is the easiest to play.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It seems he will finish it in another day as today there was no time to every student play all the songs.

I'm sure your son will do extremely well!
I took piano lessons for 8 years, but am not very good at it. At least it helped me in my college music courses and I played simple songs for my first grade students to sing.
My boys never needed help studying, and I was a teacher and so willing to help.

@FayeHazel There was no time to all students play four songs so every one only played two, they will play the others on another day to finish the exam.

@nela13 It's a lot of fun to play. It's a rhythm instrument, but you can also be somewhat melodic with it, too.
I hope son does well!

Ooops, something went crazy with the Like Button... but I know virtually nothing about music. It is one thing that was not passed down to me from my mom's side!!

I had piano and violin lessons when I was a child but I never got very far with them because I found it tiresome to learn to read music when I could just hear a tune and pick it out on the piano! Later on, I played the guitar and mandoline and recorder and a number of other instruments, all by ear. I do know what the notes mean but I can't just look at a piece of music and play it!
The recorder (which is what your son is learning) is one of the harder instruments to play well but it has a lovely tone and is very expressive. I hope your son does well in his music test!

I played the drums in a rock band back in my high school days, but we weren't very good. My brother is an amazing musician. He does not know how to read music, but he can listen to something once and then pick up any instrument and play back what he heard perfectly. I've never seen him fail at playing a musical instrument. He's pretty much a musical genius.

@nela13 He doesn't, he's an electrician by trade, but every time I visit him he has a new musical instrument he falls in love with. He's play all the horns, drums, keyboards, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, and so much more. He really should have been a musician! He tells me he loves playing instruments because it is a hobby of his, but if he had to do it for a living, he would lose the passion.
