A Pain in the neck..literally.

How is everyone doing this evening? Today is Thursday, about 845PM, and I had an interesting day, although it's far from over yet. I kind of have taken a short break from myLot, mainly just because I have been busy doing this and that and not exercising as much as usual, which is normally my time to catch up on my MyLotting. BUT I have also been dealing with this super annoying and painful neck "injury". I am calling it an injury, even though I did not really DO anything to INJURE it, but I woke up on Sunday morning with EXTREME shooting pain down the right side of my neck when I moved in certain directions, sending a sharp pain down my right shoulder and back area and the pain persisted into today, which felt like unsually persistent for something like sleeping on your neck/shoulder wrong. I have just never experienced anything like it; this sharp pain when trying to move my head. It made driving nearly impossible and extremely painful and just made my weekend kind of crappy as a result because I really felt like I couldn't "enjoy myself". I had been using a heating pad, ibuprofen, icy/hot patches, massaging it, trying to do different exercise, and NOTHING seemed to be working. Agh! After a coworker talked me into it, I ran up to an urgent care to get seen quick and am glad I did, The doctor determined I had a "trapezius strain", which is solvable and should heal in a week or so with the help of anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, and a "cervical pillow" I had never heard of a cervical pillow, and apparently my local Targets and Walmarts had not either. The doctor thought this would make the biggest difference, however, I had to order one on Amazon, which will take at minimum a few days. They said to come back if it worsened, if I started feeling tingling in any limbs, or if the pain has not gone away in 7 days. 7 days feels like a lifetime, especially since I will be taking off for a trip to Mexico on Saturday. I am bummed at this timing, but GLAD it doesn't have anything to do with a disc OR with my spinal cord, which could be SUPER bad. Have you ever had anything like this, neck pain OR persistent pain caused from sleeping wrong? Or have you ever heard of a cervical pillow? Hope everyone has been having a good week.

I've never had that issue. My last major physical ailment was bursitis in both of my shoulders last spring. I had one cortisone shot in one shoulder and nothing for the other. . . and they calmed down. No issues since.

That's good! I have heard of that but never experienced it. Was that caused by sleeping or exercise, or do you know? I just couldn't believe that I messed up this tendon or whatever just from sleeping wrong.

I am not sure if you are having Myofascial Pain Syndrome or fibromyalgia. if it is, we really need to have some treatment for this. I can relate to this because it is painful and troublesome most of the time.

Strangely, I also had a pain in the neck just over a week ago, it was like the stiff neck you get after 'sleeping wrong' but it didn't weer off. It hurt when I moved my head or my arm/shoulder and I got a sort of tingly feeling down my arm all the way to my fingers. That kind of feeling you get when you hit your 'funny bone' - like you're not quite sure whether it's painful or funny. It was painful though. After a bit of research I concluded it was cervical radiculopathy, and since I don't remember doing anything to injure myself it must be just due to getting old : ( The information said it should wear off in a few weeks or months I was dreading that as a few days was bad enough. Then on the Saturday I went dancing and it must have pulled a few things around or something because thankfully it was noticeably better after that. I went swimming a few days ago too and I think that must have helped as well becuse it's just about normal again now. That was not fun. Chronic pain is not something I deal well with.

In the Philippines, we just call it "stiff neck"... lol Whatever condition it is, as long as you have a hard time with your neck, it is stiff neck

We use the phrase stiff neck here, too, but the shooting pain is not generally something that normally comes with that. It was extremely painful. Hoping that it goes away.

Yes, I have had a lot of neck pain here and there over the last few years. It usually is caused by me sleeping wrong or due to my usual desk job. I hope yours gets better soon and that you enjoy your trip to Mexico!

Yikes! I also have a desk job, usually staring up at computers so it has been difficult with the neck pain. Hoping it goes away before the trip otherwise I will be pretty uncomfortable through the duration of it, but what do you do! Did your neck pain usually go away on it's own or did you have to do something special?

@maezee Usually I have to do neck stretches, take some painkillers, and relax my neck for half a day.

Yes I have!! It felt like contractions in my NECK, oddly enough I was pregnant when it happened. That was the only time I ever had that, thank God! The bad thing for me was the only thing I could do was massage it and force my head to turn around in every direction-no meds since I was pregnant. I hope your neck gets better fast and I will be praying!

I have slept wrong and also gotten windblown on my neck and have woken up and could not hold my head straight and it would hurt. Then I have put a wool scarf around my neck and after some days it has gone away. Never had a strain though so I hope you'll be alright and it will soon all go away.

You are not having any fun whats so ever. I'm very sorry. I easily get neck spasms and cricks. I was injured when I was a kid so that probably contributes to my present day woes. I hope you get some relief soon.

Hi there! Neck pain is a common problem and even i suffer from it. It is commonly managed alongside with modification of activities that strain the neck muscles like positioning the neck on sleeping and avoidance of the forward bending of the neck with several activities like using the cell phone. I hope you'll feel better, God bless!
