While in Madrid, we went to the great bullring in the middle of the city, just steps from a metro stop. I did not know exactly what to think, but found out quickly that bullfighting is very scripted, each 'fight' taking about 20 minutes, from the time the Matador entered the ring until the dead bull was dug off to the butcher shop. Up until the moment of the bull's death, he has had a wonderful life. After the death, he is taken to a butcher shop and prepared for eating, like other dead bulls in the shop. I do not see any great difference between bullfighting for meat and raising bulls on farms for eating, that is if you are not vegetarian, which precludes the eating.

I never knew that the bulls in bullfights are eventually killed. I thought it was just a sport like horse riding in a rodeo. The horses aren’t killed in rodeos, are they? So I thought it would be the same with the bulls in bullfights as I had never seen a real bullfight before.

In Spain yes, in Portugal no, for the killing. There are very definite rules as to how it is to be done
