“It’s Still Only Rock and Roll to Me” is a favorite song of mine by Billy Joel. Today was a day of nostalgia for me because once February ends March begins with my birthday. It was interesting that today my day began like a roll of film turning back the years. I could picture my birthdays in years gone by and certain last days of February standing in my mom’s kitchen looking out the window gazing upon the street five flights down as snow was piling up and wondering if anyone was going to make it to my birthday party the next day. This was back in my hometown New York City. My best birthday was the day I was born on March 1, 1957, which was a Friday and I came into the world at 11 AM so it is no wonder I am not an early morning person. My dad came to the hospital with a dozen red roses for my mom and was thrilled that he had a daughter. While my parents were both alive starting from the time I came into this world all my birthdays were celebrated. I have to say that the saddest birthday was the one that was celebrated right after my dad died and I turned 11 on March 1, 1968. After that, I had a say in my birthdays and it was great having all my friends over to celebrate. Once I got into young adulthood friends had drifted apart and other interest had come along so my birthdays were mostly spent going out somewhere. I like to think that I am still the little girl with the beach ball in the photo and since I don’t really feel any different wishing I still have a mom to ask advice from we will just ignore that the years have rolled on. I will mention that last year which was my first birthday after my husband had passed on I cannot remember what I did or how I felt. That is a total blank. At least I will be able to account for this birthday which will be my 16th. Oh yes, from now on I am not older than 16 and it’s all still only rock and roll to me.
