Can’t Have It All

We can’t have it all, but we’ll take what we can get!
Our older son texted me yesterday that he and our grandson will be coming for a short visit from Thursday, March 28 to Saturday, March 30. They have to fly home late Saturday due to an ice hockey game on Sunday in which our grandson is goalie.
Our Ice Princess granddaughter can’t fly down with her mom, because she can’t miss practices for her upcoming figure skating competitions.
We rented a fishing boat for that Friday, because that’s what our grandson loves to do. My brother and sister-in-law may even join us.
My husband and I are over the moon with this wonderful news, although we are a bit disappointed not to see our granddaughter, whom we adore. But we love our son and grandson, too, and will take what we can get.

@DianneN I'm not much of a fisherman but I have enjoyed some tasty fish in my life. Fishing is not just about catching fish but also about being with the people one loves just as a meal is not always about what one eats but being with the people one loves. Have a great time!

. . . I'm sure even with a short visit, the family time will be well spent. Hopefully your granddaughter can come out eventually . . . or is there anyway that you could have a short visit up there?

@DianneN Oh, ok, I didn't get how "establishing residency" worked - does that mean you have to physically be there at least 6 months and a day straight? Hopefully all the family will be able to meet up soon. Well yes, you have the perfect place to be "stuck"

Looking forward to seeing them. It will be my grandson's 5th trip to see us since we've been coming down for the winters, and our granddaughter only was able to come down twice. We can't go north this year, because we have to begin putting in our time down here to establish residency. Once done, we can come and go as we please, just as long as we live here 6 months and 1 day. It's a beautiful prison to live in.

You are lucky that they have the ability to visit you, with the distance being so great. Plus, with their busy schedules, it's still nice that they can squeeze in a family visit, even one so short. I know you will enjoy the time with them. The chartered fishing boat sounds like such a wonderful idea, I hope everyone has a good time and catches lots of fish!

Last year they landed Friday night, which turned into very early Saturday morning and returned early Monday afternoon. And that was a few days before we were leaving to return to CT!!! We told them not to bother, but our grandson was looking forward to fishing, his other passion in life. He goes to private school, so can take a couple of days off without being penalized, unlike the NYC public schools. And my son gets lots of personal days, sick days, and vacation days, just as long as he doesn't abuse them. He's been in Nairobi and flying back right now, although he won't be back until tomorrow afternoon. I would have been fired on the spot if I had to do that, or docked pay.

@DianneN Yes, I do know. I see you fixed the time machine. Oh man! My mind wasn't working yesterday. I see the dates were right all along. It was my thinking that was damaged. It must have been getting lost finding the insurance agency.

That would be great! Though you will miss Ice Princess, you can have great time with your son and grandson. You will have fun with Ice princess some other time and I hope that will be soon.

My husband and I are thrilled they can come, even if it's only for a few days. We have all kinds of plans already to keep our grandson happy.
Our son made all his arrangements while he was in Nairobi. He will be back in NYC tomorrow afternoon.
