Todays Doorstep Evangelist

My flat, just before 11 am. Doorbell rings. I answer, to find a nervous middle aged sombre looking chap stood there, clutching leaflets, unsure what to say to me. Me - If this is religious, you'll probably find I'm not interested Him - Oh, nothing like that. I'm just telling everyone about an event next month to commemorate an important death. Me (thinking I could be misjudging him and it might be about a neighbour) Oh, terribly sorry. Who died? Him - Our Lord Jesus, on the cross, 2,000 years ago. Me, in some exasperation - In what way is that not supposed to be religious? Him, moving away - sorry you were troubled, thanks for at least coming to the door.... Door closes - End. Arthur Chappell

Kind of sad. Maybe you could have lifted his spirits by offering him some water that had been turned by a miracle into a nice Cabernet Sauvignon.

@TheHorse A bottle of that surviving unopened with me for more than five minutes would be a miracle

@arthurchappell Aha! I've seen you last seven minute at times. So there ARE miracles.

There are people who preach the truth of the Gospel of Christ successfully, and there are those who timidly, with all the nervousness of the world, go out to fulfill the great commission, even at the cost of being ridiculed and mocked. by expert mockers. To each one GOD knows them and takes their action into account.

@karibe I never ridicule the evangelists I meet, though I do make it clear to them that I don't wish to share their beliefs

@karibe A leaflet through a letter box is fine, even mentioning belief to people is ok, but expecting people to buy into a belief on a doorstep encounter is not so good - religion should not be sold like a product or commodity

@arthurchappell This is how it should be, we are not forced to believe what we do not want to believe, but we must be respectful of the faith of those who believe, and especially be sensitive in dealing with those who are older and timid, but with a little enthusiasm and effort dare to touch doors to deliver the message.

How can you be a witness and tell someone about Jesus when you act afraid, but personally on your end, they should have left when you said if it is about Religion you are not interested. They have never been taught how to do anything like this.

I agree, they are reluctant to take no for an answer. He was obviously not used to evangelizing but he should know the basics at least. Religion shouldn't be sold like double-glazing.

@snowy22315 I'm not anti-religious. Quite happy for anyone to believe what they like as long as they are not ramming it down my throat or trying to deceive people with it

Oh dear, the way you tell it, he seems to have chosen very much the wrong line of work/hobby. I suppose that if you're going to have any luck as a doorstep evangelist you can't be nervous or hesitant. Not a lot of any kind of people on my doorstep. I live on the seventh floor and you have to have someone let you into the building, then walk to the top, so it's mainly people I know who show up.

@Torunn He only got to the front door of the block, not up to my personal flat. He can only do that if allowed in. I hear the bell ring and have to go down (just one flight of stairs) to answer it

I came across two yesterday but they were very nice and I took their leaflet although I already knew what it would say. Not sure what of what Religion they were as long as they were not "Mr. Brocklehurst" that was okay with me. Lovely flowers out there very nice. The ones that come to the door here I don´t care much for as they are as you say sombre and sallow looking and I find no love in them at all.
