Beautiful Day..

No, this is not a Swan Lake, this is the river Danube. I spent a wonderful sunny afternoon with my family...and swans In this part of the river, in Zemun (part of Belgrade) there are most of them, there were also ducks and gulls...But they were not interesting to me. We fed them with popcorn, they ate from my husband's hand but I was not so brave. In the end, one of them was biting his finger and releasing blood (nothing serious) but it was funny How did you spend the day? (picture is mine)

That is such a beautiful photo! I've been on the Danube. We have swans here too, but I never have fed them.

@LowRiderX You were wise to throw the popcorn and not get bitten like your husband. Lol! They really are beautiful birds that mate for life.

@DianneN I threw them popcorn into the water, I do not know if that counts My husband wanted to be 'kinder' to them unlike me, and they bite him in the end

@DianneN Yes, I do not know them so well to have confidence. And it is a legend, they say that some changes of partners, it seems that the Swans have become lovers too

@nela13 Yes, they are huge, clean and graceful (except this one on the picture) Look at his left leg, he kept his leg above the water while we fed him

Die Donau! And it's blue! I miss it ... I spent my day in the stables, fighting the snow and clipping one of my horses so he's ready for spring. Not that spring has sprung yet, but we can but hope. It's supposed to be snowing all night .. I didn't get a picture of the swans but I did here them on the river. They're getting ready to break up and fly on. There's usually a lot of them there, it's a delta between the river and the fjord and it's usually ice-free so the swans can feed all winter.

@LowRiderX Sensible lady, salad is supposed to be much better than bread, which is what people usually bring. The swans here sleep on the ice when parts of the river freezes, but then they're used to it. The Danube doesn't freeze that often, does it?

@Torunn The Danube does not freeze every year, it depends on the winter and only certain parts (along the coast) That swan that stuck his leg into the ice, probably happened during the night while he was sleeping (at least she assumes that it happened) And that what you say about the bread, you're right, people feeding them mainly with bread. I saw it today. I asked that woman what they eat except salad (because I really do not know) and she told me, corn or wheat (I could have assumed, the same as chicken) It is difficult to get that amount of corn in the city (there are many, today around 60-70 sure, if not more)

@Torunn Oh, you still have a snow... These swans on the Danube do not go away, there are many, every year more and more. Over the winter, they appealed through TV to people feed them because the Danube was frozen. Today I met a lady who brought a full bag of green salad and extradite it in the river, they all ate She told me that during the winter, once a swan was leg trapped in the ice, and she brought a hammer to free him.

@LowRiderX Swans can be eaten and people do eat them. All swans in England belong to the Queen and it's forbidden to kill them. Yet, I've read that there are people who kill and eat them nevertheless. During the Renaissance rich people loved eating swans. (Wikipedia) "Often served at feasts, roast swan was a favored dish in the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, particularly when skinned and redressed in its feathers and served with a yellow pepper sauce; others preferred to stuff the bird with a series of increasingly smaller birds, in the style of a turducken. Swans have been the property of the Crown since around the twelfth century, but Edward IV’s Act Concerning Swans in 1482 clearly defined that ownership. To this day, Queen Elizabeth II participates in the yearly Swan Upping, in which the royal Swan Master counts and marks swans on the Thames, and the kidnapping and eating of swans can be considered a treasonous crime. Great Britain’s royals are still allowed to eat swan, as are the fellows of St. John’s College of Cambridge, but to the best of our knowledge, they no longer do."

@MALUSE Thank you for sharing this. All species of Swans living in Serbia are strictly protected species. Even if they are allowed for eating, I think that I would never be able to do it, it is a real detriment to kill such beautiful birds. By the way, I thought Royal Family was the favorite quail meat
