When someone says that he cares about you

I have a question. If someone says that he cares about me, but he only asks how I am doing. I am talking about an online friend. If he only asks that question and then he doesn't say anything, does this mean that he cares about me? When we talk I am the one who talks to him, he just says: ahh, when something bad happens to me. I wonder if he cares about me. I would like to deactivate my messenger, but I am not sure if this is possible. Do you think that he cares about me? I stopped talking to him and I hope I am not doing a mistake.

You have done a right thing. It's obvious that he just regards you as a spare tyre.

Perhaps he does care in a detached way as he has become interested in you and your story. Sadly online relationships are not a true reflection of what a relationship should be. There is no real involvement with the person and you can hide a lot online, perhaps he is married or disabled or older or younger than he says. You cant tell and we only tell what we want people to see of us online. Its not a real reflection of life although online relationships are great for venting emotions and getting advice from people who have perhaps the same problems as sus they aren't real. You cant turn a real person in your life off like you can online. If you enjoy talking to him online and he seems to enjoy listening there is no harm in it but if you are expecting anything more I think you will be disappointed.

He might truly care but maybe he doesn't know what to say, maybe he doesn't want to say the wrong thing? I don't know him or the situation so it's hard to know but this would be my guess. =)

Certainly as an online friend we can care about each other but for many reasons it isn't the same as when we see friends face to face as in other family members. Deep down we are all just human. It can be uncertain to know what the other person wants out of an online friendship and not everyone expresses it honestly?
