Pulling Wagon: Buying Things in the Open

When I was a young kid, my parents usually bring us to my 100-year-old granny’s hometown. Since I have been living in the city, I feel so gobsmacked with new things in my life. There is one particular thing that lingers in my mind, the ‘pulling wagon.’ It was not an ordinary one. Most of the locals use a carabao or horse to pull the wagon with so many things hanging on it. These things are being sold to the local people in the province. Through the years, it is still being practiced by the local sellers in the Philippines’ provinces. “Have you seen this type of pulling wagon?” “Do you have this kind of selling things in the open?” Image Credit: dutchpickle.com

They are hardly seen today compared in the past. We still have a rattan chair set that still survive which we bought from these peddlers of native crafts many years ago.

I do think that most of their local products are good in quality. I agree that there are a few of them now, I had seen others used motorcycles in pulling their wagons.

@Shavkat _Motorcycles? I guess that's progress. Will they replace the products made from native materials to made in China plastic products?

@josie_ I do think that some of these products are made in China. In Pangasinan area, they still have bamboo made products.

I agree. I had seen the modern ways of the locals. But then, it still continued by them. It was just my fun memories during my childhood years.

@rakski That's the reason why I like going to the provinces. I can see new things that cannot be seen in cities.

I think they cannot be seen in cities now. For local provinces, there are a few of them doing this kind of business.

There were a lot that passes by during the 80s, I even bought a small bamboo garden set. The ones that use to come here were ox drawn rather than a horse, I spoke to some of them and I was told they came from the province of Pangasinan.

I think they are right. You can find them in the Pangasinan. I had seen some shelters that can be moved from one place to another. They are also made of bamboos.

I have never seen a wagon filled with lots of things to see. That would be really neat to see.

It was like seeing it for the first time during my younger years. I also felt the same way. Most locals would be happy if seeing them, it means they don't need to go to the public market. They can buy household cleaning tools with the seller of this kind of wagon.

It can only be seen in the countryside here. But I do think that it is nice for the seller to sell things as being started in many years back.

I enjoy watching it as they pass by the road near our old house when I was still young. It seems they no longer sell wares on horse-drawn wagon like that.

I agree. Some of them had changed their way of transporting their goods. They can just hire a jeepney sometimes.

Wow, what a photo! Never saw anything like that in the U.S. The only thing close to a wagon with items for sale I've ever seen is on TV Westerns. They were like traveling salesman. It sure is loaded with items to sell

I am not sure if "pulling wagon" is the right name of this carriage. In the visayan region we love to call this "tartanilla", or a " Carousa", words of Spanish provenance.

It is nice to know. I am referring to an English term for this discussion. I am sure that there are so many names that can refer to this pulling wagon in different provinces of the Philippines. It can be used to their own dialect. It is nice that you dropped by. I thought you are located in the Cordillera region.

No, but it the old days they talked about the "gypsy wagons" or peddlar wagons, but that was long before my time. The closest thing would be flea markets and yard sales here, or resale shops. You must go to them though.

In cities, we do have garage sales and the like. It is best to visit these places to shop for things at a cheaper price. I had seen some of these gypsy wagons on movies. I got interested in seeing how old folks use them before.

Here it is common, people are selling things on a rickshaw puller. The difference they do pull by their own without any help by any one.
