This is one of the mysterious plants in my yard that I did not have a clue as to what it was. I learned today that it was Boehmeria cylindrica, or more commonly known as False Nettle. There are so many plants and flowers in my yard that I have no clue as to what they are. I became very curious, especially with the ones that produce flowers and decided to learn what they were all for. Since this is an old homestead, I imagined that a lot of these plants were used for medicinal purposes. Many of the plants are indeed used for first aid and remedies for ailments. I joined the MS Native Plant Society group on Facebook and the members there have been very helpful. Others I have found online and have been able to easily identify. False Nettle wasn't an herb or plant used for medicinal purposes. However, it is a host to several butterfly species such as Red Admiral, Question Mark, and Comma. This is one of the plants my husband keeps taking down when he gets the week eater out. He calls them all WEEDS. I have proposed a butterfly garden in order to "save" this native plant. I think we may have found a solution for this one plant.

My husband also called all plant 'weeds'. He was born in the very dry north of my country. He changed his ways a bit when I gave him some bean seeds to plant and they came out. He was very proud of them and insisted on collecting the beans himself.

I'm going to put these behind my chicken coop if I have to. They should be safe there since there is several feet of growed up area. I started cleaning the fence row behind the coop last year. Another day of clearing back there should give enough space to make a bed or two.

@LindaOHio We had some years ago. Then with several stray dogs here at one time, they quit coming. It's quiet again or I should say quieter. lol

That would be a good way to keep some of them.

I really want to keep the ones that are edible for the chickens: chickweed, two different kinds of mint, what I call a deer leaf...gotta get true I.D. on this one and some clover.
