Feeling a bit sad

I went to visit my mum today. She is in a nursing home and has dementia so I always leave feeling a bit sad and guilty for leaving her there even though I know she is not physically or mentally able to be anywhere else. She knows all her children but gets confused in conversation at times and then gets upset because she knows she doesn't know. I do my best to make her laugh and its lovely when she does. She laughed today a few times. She is very well looked after so thankfully I have no worries on that score but it is still sad to watch her fading away from us.

@teenal That really is the worst. You really do feel like you’re abandoning your parent but there’s nothing you can do about it.

It's so sad. Dementia is an awful illness. I wonder why people suffer so much.

I would feel guilty leaving her too, but thankfully she is being well taken care of.

I am sorry. My Dad always worried he would have to go to a nursing home. He passed in the hospital. Thankfully I was there. All you can do is savor the moments and memories.
