we couldn't wear black

i once worked in a small company where we were requested not to wear black.
the owner said it's not really him, but his father who does not like the color black.
i didn't mind.
actually, i had to adjust my wardrobe because everyone, including the boss/owner, wore really casual clothes.
so casual that, one time, when i wore a dark blue short-sleeved collared blouse with straight-cut light brown slacks/trousers, my officemate whispered, "You were job hunting, weren't you?"
so i learned to compromise: the next time i wore that blouse, i paired it with denim jeans.
the next time i wore those slacks/trousers, i wore a t-shirt-type top.
then footwear was either loafers or flat, closed shoes.
did you ever work or heard of a company with unusual dress code?
have you ever gone to work before or after a job interview?

i remember a foreign bank telling me they don't want exposed toes. slingbacks where the ankle is exposed is okay, but preferably closed shoes

@hereandthere We could wear sandals during summers, if elegant sandals, no problems exposing toes, ankles, knees, the important was that you looked good, not casual.

i know there are hair salons here that provide black uniforms for their hairdressers so the stray hair strands don't show.
in my previous companies, i wore jeans on saturdays

Yes, that is the same question we get when people are dressed up.

it stood out only because the dress code there was casual. in my previous jobs, that was normal office wear.

@hereandthere Were you able to get to know why you can't wear black?

I have gone to a job interview during lunch time. I had already given notice at my current job. The last place I worked the only dress code was that we were not allowed to wear jeans. It seemed an odd thing to focus on, as not wearing jeans certainly does not mean you look nice or professional.

i tend to go on leave when i go to interviews because you can't tell how long it will take. sometimes there's several of you scheduled, sometimes you get a second interview while you're there.
i tend to slack off when i'm in jeans, so would wear them on saturdays.

For me, I've never worked in place with a dress code that was out of the ordinary. I loved that I could wear whatever I wanted, but would be reasonable (after all, it was a work environment and I would have to deal with the public). I don't think I've ever done a job interview while already working. You could not wear any black at all at that place?

no, but what others did was they would ask the staff if the boss was coming that day or not and would wear something with black on it, but not totally black.
since i started working, i made sure i wore something that reminded me i'm at work. when i'm too casual, i tend to slack off.

@hereandthere But now that you are mature, you wear those colors already, I suppose.
I also avoid red. I only bought a red blouse when the theme of our Christmas party was in red.

@SIMPLYD of course, i had to start wearing black when i started working, but i never wore all black. for example, black and brown or black and blue.
i do like red shoes, red watch, red bag.

I have never been told what color I could wear, only whether jeans were allowed.

still gigglin' o'er yer officemate thinin' ya'd been job huntin' :) we'd 30 days to completely re-vamp our attire, with jest a weeks notice (right 'fore the holidays) that all we'd been wearin' 'twas gonna be taboo.
can't say i've e'er done such? did take a personal day though to hit the pavement.

I worked at two places where we could wear jeans and t-shirts. One of those places was a place that helps people with disabilities find work. So yes I went back to work after I went to a job interview.

I didn't want to wear uniforms when I was working in an office; a skirt and a blouse at that which was very uncomfortable because I was taking a public transportation. Easier to wear slacks or jeans.

same here. so uncomfortable to commute in skirt and pantyhose back then. i like that now, a lot of females don't have second thoughts about it. they just wear those black stretchy shorts underneath.

same here, either pants, skirts or blazer. if i wear a black blouse, i will pair it with blue or brown pants or skirt.

the dress code was casual, just don't wear black.
providing uniforms depends on how big the company is and their budget

@cacay1 more like traditional cultural belief on the father's part, and our boss was just being a good son
