There’s a new guy serving at Madeleine’s Beach Bar, and it makes such a difference having your coffee made by someone pleasant for a change. The person who’s normally there at 7.30 in the morning is grumpy, disobliging, dishevelled and obviously doesn’t want to be there. The new guy is well turned-out, efficient, careful not to spill coffee in my saucer and friendly. He actually engages with the customer but not in an obtrusive way. He senses whether the customer wishes to chat or to be left alone. This is the kind of person I would want working for me if I owned a café. Now everything is just right - good coffee, an empty, early morning beach, and interesting newspaper, no music other than the gentle lap of small waves on the shore and a pleasant, amiable barista.
