Worst Foods For Your Heart

If you were to advise someone on maintaining a healthly heart what list of the foods you would tell them to stop eating? I'm sure we could create quite a list! Here are a few items I discovered, that may not be so obvious when talking about foods which can contribute to heart disease. They are loaded with sodium a contributor to high blood pressure which damages our blood vessels. And some contain other harmful ingredients. So, avoid these items or substitute low salt alternatives: -Canned vegetables: High in preservatives and salt. Consider a switch to frozen veggies. -Frozen Dinners: Again, loaded with sodium. Even an item like Lean Cuisine is loaded with the stuff. -Cottage Cheese: Yes, although it may not taste salty, one cup can equal 700 milligrams. Consider a swap to Greek Yougurt instead which is low salt and high protein. -Frozen pies: Here the culprit is trans fats, not good for the heart plus fattening. -Chinese Take Out: Sugary sauces and deep fried items are packed with calories, fat, sodium, and carbs. -Fruit Juice: What? It’s natural! It’s packed with Vitamin C! All true, but it is also packed with sugar. About 36 grams per cup, more than what's in donuts. I've got many more to add so let's compare your worst foods list to mine. Any other foods we should be careful of eating? These foods were some recommendations from an article I found by "Eat This Not That. If you interested in the full list here is a link to this article. Me eating healthy isn't good for the heart. If I started eating healthy my wife and kids would have heart attacks. Why risk their health just for my own? Sounds selfish to me. ;~)

The problem with all this is that being alone I thrive on canned goods and frozen food which makes it simple for me just to cook and eat. I am not up to making meals for myself. Besides I love cranberry juice and I don't think I drink enough to do away with myself and what are some chicken nuggets but enough to keep me going. I do thank you for the warning but these warnings scare me more than just simply eating and not worrying about it I have lots more to worry about. I love Chinese food and will not stop eating it but then I eat it perhaps once a month.

I understand your feelings. I am not the best at following dietary advice but it is good to be informed. I guess a common phrase used with health is "moderation." Eat these unhealthy foods in moderation not as a daily thing as you suggested with Chinese food.

I do really think that we need to monitor our food intake. Nowadays, foods in the market seem safe to consume. In fact, they weren't.

Coca Cola is also packed with sugar, but the worst foods for the hears are: fast-food burgers, processed and cured meats, deep-fried foods, sugary cereals and margarine.

Yes, your so right. All great additions to the list. Lots of sugar in soda and juice products. I've been trying to eat less of the processed meats and make sandwiches made with roasted chicken instead. Unfortunately, convenience sometimes gets the best of me. I have limited my consumption of red meat though.

Although I have just about cut out frozen dinners I still buy a few can goods. I have began to hoe can and freeze a lot of foods so I control what is added to them.

Freezing food items is a great alternative. I have tried to limit many unhealthy food items although I admit it is difficult to avoid eating some of them. I try to use moderation as a key. Who doesn't like an occasional sausage or bacon with their morning eggs. And a slice of pizza on the weekends, lol.

Ever since I had to go on a salt restricted diet due to high blood pressure I have found that most things are just too salty unless you cook them at home.

It is surprising how many products contain salt. Simple everyday items we put on food like mayo, ketchup, and tomato sauce contain alarming salt levels. Probably why I have HBP too.

@porwest I understand. We have to choose our battles with food don't we?

@dgobucks226 It actually sucks that so much food has loads of salt in it. When you get put on a salt restriction, it becomes all too apparent how much salt is in EVERYTHING. I mean, I even looked into, since I travel a lot on business, going the healthy route and just having a salad. A salad contains as much salt as a hamburger. So...when it comes down to it you know what I choose.

Looks can be deceiving. Frozen foods are loaded with salt. Just don't made it a daily habit.
