Would you climb Mount Everest?

The dead people get left there, along with a lot of trash. It's very expensieve just to get the permit to climb (as @LadyDuck found out, at least $25 000) plus it must cost a fortune to get there, equipment, sherpas etc. Would you pay all that money to end up in a queue going up to the sumit? Can you understand why people do it? I'm think that if I wanted to climb a really tall mountain, I'd pick a less busy one.

No, I can watch a movie of others climbing instead.

That'd be a very slow movie if they filmed it now, the queue doesn't seem to move very fast.

There's raports about people pushing eachother in the queue to get there. It's not a place you want to get pushed, but it's also nuts that it happens there. Of all places. Underground in London I expect to be pushed, not climbing mountains

@greatlady Especially since so many die on the way up.

@Torunn That must be it. They don't take into consideration the effects of altitude sickness.

I have knee problems. A small mountain would be a problem for me, so I guess Mount Everest is out of the question I don't mind. I am pretty sure I wouldn't try to climb it even if I could. I would like to visit Nepal, but I don't have any goals about climbing a mountain.

@Torunn Himmelbjerget is the most famous mountain, but our highest mountain is Moellehoej. It is about 170 meters high, that is very small compared your mountains Actually I did climb Himmelbjerget in the past when my knees were better than now. One of my friends lives in Silkeborg and there is a ferryboat from that city to Himmelbjerget.

Even Himmelbjerget? Or do you have a higher one? I always forget. The mountains around here are about 550 meter on the tallest, so no problem when the weather's OK. A couple of hourse away they're up to 1500 meters I think, haven't climb any of them. Might try one day, but must buy proper shoes first. And I'm thinking about getting one of those walking sticks for walking down, they're supposed to make it easier on the knees.

@Porcospino Møllehøj as in Tall Mill? Or Mill hill? Mill hill sounds nice :-) You (or our probably common ancestors) have built taller grave mounds than Denmarks highest mountain the internet says! It's a good thing we haven't tried that.

Not at this time. I read an article the other day how it is actually packed up there . . . that there are too many people trying to climb up Mt. Everest. There was a photo of a line of people trying to get to the top . . .people are pushing each other and such because they are too close to the next person - and it is a treacherous way down if you fall. No thank you!

@Torunn Seriously absurd. And if we have to pay that amount of money to do it, I expect to be taxi'd to the top .

@much2say True! If I'm going to use that much money on one trip, it'll either has be very luxurious or involve travelling around the world. Not just climbing one mountain.

@Torunn If I traveled everywhere else in the world, I might consider climbing Mt. Everest - that is "might".

I have read this morning an interview of a Swiss who just came back. He said that it was horrible, they stepped on corpses to come down, he was horrified.

@LadyDuck I reckon they do it because it might mean more bodies if they try to get them down from the mountain

Yes, it seems like quite a few of the deaths have been on the way down, and since they don't remove the bodies, they're just there. I read about a Norwegian who has been there, training for climbing the sumit. He was very sure he'd make it next year and went on how fantastic he was and how fit. He didn't have time to get the money for it this year

@Torunn - No, I don't know what that name means exactly, but it is high enough that one can see the midnight sun there during Summer solstice - (Fi)aava means wide

It'd might not be less busy, but definitly less tall ;-) Does it look like a pair of scissors? Because of the saksa part of the name.

@buenavida That sounds lovely! I live too far south for the midnight sun, I keep planning to go north in the summer.

@1hopefulman I think it's great they've done it! Hope they also demand more money from the climbers, since everyone seems to have just left their trash up there. I think they've made some rule about everyone have to bring back trash and then get a deposit back.

@crazyhorseladycx One would have hoped that trying to do something that difficult would have given them some kind of feeling of loyalty towards eachother, but it seems like it might the other way around and that the competitive instincts are stronger :-/

I'm hoping they use some of the money to clean the areas that can aren't too high, or to benefit the sherpas and the nature in the area. In one of the mountains in Norway they've started having someone staying about half-way to the goal, warning walkers without proper equipment that the rest of the climb will be long and cold. No way near as high as Everest, but people still fall down from things and die.

I agree! They must have let far too many people climb it this year, and many of them don't know what they're doing. Then if one people get in trouble, they'd slow the whole queue down and more people'll get trouble

@LowRiderX Late spring is a very nice time of the year in many countries. I haven't seen about the medicinal herbs, but I've seen some about the nature in the area and it would be an interesting place to visit

@Torunn This part is extremely rich in medicinal herbs, probably at that time, spring or maybe even summer. I watched a lot of documentary shows about the Himalayas and the villages that are in the bottom

As it is now, wouldn't you rather send them to a less crowded mountain? There's several nearly as hight I think, but without the crowds. Not K2, that's supposed to be hopeless to climb, but some other mountain. Maybe one with a good view of Mount Everest :-)
