Most coffee is made with out the benefit of chicory, and has primarily coffee beans, Chickory is a small semi bitter root in the dandelion family. Probably the most famous chicory coffee is that out of Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans. I was lucky enough to have it there one time. Other brands that contain chicory are available including one of my favorites Chock Full of Nuts. I have some now. The picture is of the chicory root.

I did not realize that, but that explains it's popularity in New Orleans..which has a huge French influence.

@snowy22315 They have also the Sazerac cocktail, which was invented by the family of a neighbor to sell stocks of cheap brandy cognacs, but it seems that they do it with cheap whiskeys today.

Try it sometime. It gives the coffee a slightly different taste.

Coffee should be coffee, to my way of thinking. If you add chicory to coffee you are adulterating it and can only be doing it to make the drink cheaper.
Chicory root was first added to coffee, it seems, by the French in the early 19th Century when coffee supplies were short (because of a trade embargo by Napoleon). Chicory was added to make supplies of coffee go further and to make it cheaper. It's likely that it became popular in New Orleans because the French settlers there brought the habit with them.
IN the UK, before instant, freeze-dried coffee became available, there was something called Camp Coffee which came in a bottle and was a coffee and chicory essence. The drink made from it was abominable but it did make a very good coffee cake and that is why we had it in the house. Coffee and walnut cake is my favourite to this day.
The picture is of the very pretty chicory flower, not the root! Must have been a typo.

No, it wasn't a typo..but that is the picture that was available. Actually, the root pic was next to it..but people are more likely to identify the flower in the first place..a root isn't really that interesting.

@snowy22315 I've had it. It's good. This is regular chicory root you can buy ground or in something you grind. I'm wondering how it taste.

It might depend on how much chicory is in the coffee. I think just a small amount makes it better.
