Do you like to exercise?

I hate it. There, I said it. I know many of you guys are really into working out and being healthy and I'm so envious. I wish I had the desire and will power to really be more active. Years ago, I was a member and a part time fitness tech at Curves for Women, a fitness center for women only. I actually loved doing the work outs. They were perfectly designed for the average middle age woman. We got a balance of cardio and strength training. But they went out of business and I knew I needed some kind of exercise, so I joined our local gym. I make myself go, but I really don't like it. I have some health issues that keep me off some of the machines. I do some of them for strength training, then do the elliptical and walk on the tread mill for the aerobics part. I've never been athletic, but I know I do feel better when I exercise. I know NJchicca and Lori A Moore and some others of you are very fit and work hard at it. How do you keep it up? Do you really enjoy it or do you just make yourself? I want/need to lose eight or nine pounds. How hard can that be? The older I get, the harder it is to maintain or lose weight. Of course, if I would make myself go to the gym more often than I do, I might get those few pounds off and feel better at the same time.

I would not worry about this. You can do most of this at home. Get some light weight to strengthen your bones. We need to keep our bones sharp as we age.Just do basic workout.Set up some sort of a schedule there. I f I was near by.Would get some weight for you. 3 lbs or 4 is a good start

I have a pair of three pound weights at home, but I seldom use them. I do add weights to my workout at the gym, though. Thanks for the advice!

@1creekgirl I hate consciously exercising but I love to swim and walk in the hills which are both good exercise but that’s not why I do them.

@1creekgirl You’ve got it. A happy coincidence that the things I like are also good for me.

Do you swim and walk because you enjoy it, but not necessarily because they're exercise?

aint that a 4-letter word?? ugh, i don't 'xercise, aint done such since my schoolin' days when such 'twas a requirement. when i'm out with the horses, tendin' the lands/gardens, fixin' fences, etc., i feel i walk plenty miles, get that weight liftin' 'n 't times more'f a cardio workout'n i'd like. walkin' 'tis actually the best 's 'tis easiest'n the joints. a brisk walk can get'cher cardio goin' 'n ya can get those ankle weights fer yer legs if'n ya desire. can e'en go all out'n get matchin' weights fer ya to carry. i feel fer ya's i've not been out's much's i'd liked the past month 'r so (viral bronchitis...beast will not leave) 'n when i went to put my jeans'n this morn, 'twas a tad 'npleasant (they'd jest been washed/dried) 'til they stretched out a bit.

I can understand. You sure get your share of "exercise" with all the work you do. Hope that nasty bronchitis will soon be gone.

I would love to exercise but at times the will power is missing. I try to dance and zumba. I try to walk but maintaining and doing it regularly has always been a struggle to me

I liked Curves too. Ours closed as well. I like walking, cycling, paddling my kayak and Yoga. I don't need the gym. Hubby plays hockey five days a week from August to April. He loves it and can't wait to get there every day. We have to do something we love.

I think about it now and then but yes I hate working out. Way back when, when I was in the Marines I ran all the time and worked out and then I guess I just got lazy and stopped doing it all and now I am kind of sad and disappointed in myself.

I know I can't exercise now like I did years ago, but are there some activities you can enjoy and get back into exercising?

It depends on what it is..I really enjoy things like swimming, tennis, yoga and that sort of thing..but working out at the gym in some kind of hard core class..I am not into. I think it is important to do what you enjoy in terms of exercise otherwise you won't stick with it.

That's true, if you enjoy however you're getting your exercise, you're more likely to continue. But there are no physical activities that I really like. Unless you call shopping "exercise."

@1creekgirl Yes, I mostly prefer to walk in park. I'm mostly with my headset listening to songs when I walk. Park sets the mood for me to listen to song and walk in my own style. Also, we will have other people who walk along making you to push yourself with more speed. =) It's more congenial for me. I don't walk on streets(pedestrian pathways I mean) and I don't consider that as an exercise. I will be diverted and my speed of walking will fluctuate..

We got to exercise at the senior center one day a week and we have made friends and we really enjoy it and we go to the YMCA for in the pool exercise 3 days a week, also lots of fun. It has made us much more fit and it is not boring at all.

I could enjoy walking, but we live in the country and if the ground isn't level, I fall easily. There's a nice path/road to the back field, but there are snakes, bears, and bob cats around.

@1creekgirl I do not walk as much as I want to but I exercise 3 times a day at home and I do not go to a gym because of my shoulders cannot do things there. I only eat two meals a day now and do not eat inbetween meals anymore. I have no choice. I do not want to be fat again so have to do things but need to get out and walk more. My knee on my left leg has been bothering me so taking it easier and not walking as much now.

That's good that you're exercising in spite of some health problems. Even though we live out in the country, there aren't any level places to walk without almost falling, so I try to walk at the gym along with some strength training.
