An update on our kangaroos

I haven’t written much about the kangaroos on our place recently. We still have a lot that spend most of their time on our 18 acres. Some still panic when we drive through but some are more accepting of the noises that come with our presence. When we first came to live here, they would head for the bush but now they often opt to hop (I like that – opt to hop) into the middle of the paddock rather than head for the bush. We went down to work in the shed yesterday and in the photo you can see the group that were feeding nearby. By the bare trees, you can also tell that it’s winter here.

They are just too darn cute!! Thanks for sharing photo's of them-some of us will never actually see one except for photo's like this. =)

I suppose that is true although we did seem them in zoos in Europe. I didn't take any photos of them because I see them all the time here!

Whoah! They are just playing around here. Are they agitated if seeing people?

@JudyEv I just only seen them on photos or TV. Can we make them as our pet?

@Shavkat They make lovely pets but you really have to get them when they're very young. The older ones don't tame very easily.

As long as we don't get too close and don't make too much noise, they will stay about that distance. But sometimes they panic and hop away.

@JudyEv actually from the photo it makes me want to walk right up to them and shake their hands but I am sure they would not appreciate that

That's pretty awesome that you have so many roos that visit your property. I still think of them as giant, overgrown rats though. haha

They don't look anything like rats to me. Some of the smaller varieties do but not ours.

@JudyEv I just look at those tails and the only thing I can think of at that point is "giant rats." haha

I guess they like whatever is on your property. Around here it is deer although you don't see a big group like that typically. The most you will see is 3 or 4 at a time..but one time while camping years ago, we saw an entire meadow of them...maybe 40 or 50.

More and more of the paddocks are being fenced off so our property is more enticing to them I guess.

My kids saw your photo and were ! You get kangaroos there like we get squirrels! I still can't believe you have 18 acres . . . we don't even have a full quarter of an acre .

@JudyEv I'd be with deer ! Simply amazing to have all that land - I still cannot imagine peeking out to your yard and there are the kangaroos.

I'd be if we had squirrels or deer! We like having a bit of space around us. We have lived in cities on very small blocks but once we were able we moved to the country.

That site is awesome. I loved when i lived in the country in NW Colorado. We had deer and elk there all the time in the winter months. The rest of the time it was mainly just deer.

The pastures get really lush here over winter. This photo was taken years ago but this is how our paddocks look at the moment. They're covered in what we know as dandelions.

critters're funny like that - love yer 'opt to hop', lol. sort'a reminds me 'f the feral cats here. sometimes they'll scatter like rats when i open the door 'n other times they'll be right'n the walkway'n jest lay there 's ya step o'er 'em. they seem to know that'cher place's a respite. that'cha don't mind their presence. how wonderful to've gotten a pic 'f 'em all together like that :). 'tis mid summer here'n i could 'nly hope my grass'd be that green, lol.

A few of the roos now trust us enough that they are reluctant to shift when we're in the car and will wait till the last minute to move.

Tell me, do many Australians eat Kangaroo. While watching MKR on TV they made a dish with kangaroo and many of the contestants snubbed it?

I guess in the outback more people eat it. And you can buy it in butcher shops from time to time. It has quite a strong, gamey taste.
