Blue trees in Western Australia are helping raise awareness of suicide and depression

The last few times we’ve travelled to Bunbury from our home in Donnybrook, south-west Western Australia, we’ve noticed a blue tree. The tree is one of over 140 dead trees which have been painted blue as part of the ‘Blue Tree Project’ which aims to raise awareness of suicide and depression. I don’t know how long ‘blue’ has been associated with sadness or how the connection originiated. Beyond Blue is an Australian independent non-profit organisation that addresses issues associated with mental disorders such as depression, suicide and anxiety. People are being encouraged to paint a dead tree blue to honour a person who has taken his or her own life. I suppose it’s a good thing. Certainly, we need to be aware of those in our midst who might be suffering some form of mental illness. I snapped a photo of this one as we came home from returning the scaffolding.

This is an interesting way to raise awareness. The color blue has long been associated with feeling down or sad in music and literature.

@DWDavis Thanks so much for going to all that trouble. I knew about the (musical) blues of course but didn't know about 'why' so thanks for that.

Yes but I wonder how it originally came about that blue was associated with sadness.

It is incredible how sad the tree looks. I think it's a good idea to honour people who have taken their own life. It is also a reminder, enjoy life and find a solution, there is no come back if you kill yourself.

It would have taken quite an effort to paint the tree. It's been done by hand.

I have to admit it didn't strike me as meaning 'sad' when I saw the first one. I couldn't work out what it was supposed to represent.

How sad although it is a very emotional initiative, it always leads to a depression of knowing that someone has lost to battle.

Yes, that's true too. Some people can't be helped in time to stop them taking their own lives.

@JudyEv Friend, I think that one way to raise awareness is not harassing these people to rehabilitations locked in psychiatric or nursing homes, I think this makes the situation worse, since it leads to the frustration of an individual who is not mentally or animally in their right mind , but rather, encourage them that everything in this life has a solution.

I always applaud many of these 'awareness' campaigns, but I am not sure any of it really accomplishes the goal. But there is certainly no harm in it.

Perhaps it will get people talking about it for a while. I suppose anything is worth trying.

@JudyEv But talk is just talk. Many people think that just doing this sort of thing is enough to solve problems. I am not sure it is enough. Paint a tree and I have done my part. Sorry. You have only painted a tree, You have done nothing to actually address the problem.

@porwest I take your point and you could well be right. Hopefully it might encourage people to talk to friends who might seem out of sorts.

I think it would make me feel sad to see blue trees all around. Maybe they could be in a designated area.

So far I don't think there is a lot. Just the odd one here and there. We saw another today, miles away from the first one we saw.

That sounds like a good thing to do with so many people suffering from depression. I hope it makes them aware people care.
