A steel cutout at Yandanooka, Western Australia

Yandanooka is another of the tiny West Australian settlements that have almost disappeared off the map. There is a hall there and one house. The area was one of the first to be a ‘soldier settlement’ area. Soldiers returning from World War I were offered blocks in the area which were to be cleared and cultivated. Fifty such blocks were distributed over three years but the concept was not a success. Some blocks were too small to be viable and some of the returning soldiers carried physical and mental problems that rendered them unsuitable for such hard physical labour.
The steel cutout erected near the hall commemorates the contribution made by the soldier settlers. The interpretative panel has the woman commiserating with her ex-soldier husband about his ‘gammy leg’ and how tired he is.

That was a great work of art. It got the story to tell and people who see that can understand what it means.

They fought during WWI and WWII so they would have all passed away by now.

It was a crazy scheme, doomed to failure from the very beginning.
