A windy place to be buried!

This is on top of the Purbeck Hills in Dorset. The few trees that grow on the crest of the chalk ridge are permanently bent by the prevailing wind. The low mounds are tumuli - burial mounds that date from the Iron Age, before the Romans arrived. This is a timeless place, very peaceful and with amazing views in all directions.

Nice photo. Can you still see any Roman ruins there?

There is not much of Roman origin in this immediate area, but plenty elsewhere in Dorset, such as roads and evidence of military encampments.

@garysibi Bath, of course, owed much to the Romans, as did Leicester, which is the city nearest to where I live.

@indexer My daughter went to the UK and Ireland recently and got some nice photos of some ruins. She also made it to Bath where I've also been.

@indexer Desolate, romantic and terrifying. Graveyards in my experience are invariably windy.

We didn't feel particularly terrified on this occasion! I have walked across this area in early January when it was feet deep in snow - that was a bit less welcoming!

It does look a very peaceful place. We have areas in Australia where the trees become permanently bent.
