Held captive by a joey

We were away for six weeks, home for a couple of weeks then away again for a fortnight. The kangaroos that come and go on our property have a peaceful time when we’re away. There are several who enjoy the few plants that we have in the garden. One is a native groundcover and one doe in particular can often be found munching on it. I was late going into the kitchen this morning to get my coffee and spotted a yearling joey soaking up the sun just a short way outside the kitchen window. When it heard me, it propped itself up to check out the noise. However, it didn’t run away. The doe and joey stayed around for ages and virtually held us prisoner in the house as we didn’t want to go out and scare them. We’ve been here sixteen years and while we’re used to the kangaroos, we are still enthralled by them.

They have known it already, they are friendly to you, so maybe instead of running, the joey just stare at you.

They have pretty heads. The red kangaroo isn't so attractive. He has a roman nose and isn't so dainty.

He was lapping up the sunshine. When I came back later, he had laid down again.

These aren't scary. Even the big bucks hop away as soon as they see you. It is only if they've lost their fear of humans that you need to be scared.

I would love to be a prisoner for such adorable ones. . Here I am made captive by monkeys on few days. They came in a big troop and I close all doors and windows. I don't step out till they all are gone.

Oh dear, I wouldn't like that. I've heard they are very cheeky and can do a lot of damage.

@arunima25 I guess they steal any fruit and vegetables that you might be growing. Is that right?

@JudyEv Oh! They surely damage a lot in my garden each time they visit. Thanks to rain they have not visited in a month or more.

The bucks (males) are much bigger than the does - around 6 ft high but the does are a bit smaller. Here is one of the bucks. He has massive shoulders and has had an ear hurt in a fight.

I remember reading once that they are quite dangerous if provoked @JudyEv then again how many wild animals are not dangerous when provoked

@rebelann Those that lose their fear of humans are dangerous and of course, if cornered, they're going to protect themselves, aren't they? As you say, when provoked.

He is such a little cutie. I wouldn't want to scare him nor any others off either. You being gone for so long, I am sure that they are waiting for you to leave 'their' home and they might be wondering why you didn't look startled when they saw you.

@JudyEv I wouldn't worry unless they take the bed and have you camping on the verandah, or they put their names on the mailbox.

I'm surprised that in the 16 years you have been living there, you haven't adopted a pet kangaroo yet. Have any of them been successfully domesticated as pets? Or, in the 16 years you've been there, has there been any kangaroos that have been exceptionally friendly to you and not afraid to come up to you?

@JudyEv It’s probably better for them in the long run to maintain their natural fear of humans.

If the babies are orphaned and hand-reared then they are tame and make wonderful pets. In some campsites, they become tame enough to pet. None of ours have become that tame but we haven't really encouraged it by feeding them.

@moffittjc I think so. Some farmers shoot one occasionally for their dogs or whatever so best they retain their natural timidity.

@JohnRoberts I've no idea. It's the 'official' name for baby marsupials. Baby monotremes (platypus and echnidna) are called 'puggles'. Sounds very official, doesn't it? NOT!

Don't tell anyone but we've moved our computers into the lounge over winter to save heating the office. But from the office window, I could see the birdbath and there was always something interesting to watch there.

The baby joeys are starting to poke their heads out now. When conditions are good, as they mostly are in this area, the joeys can appear at almost any time.

@judyev I understand that. I don’t like to open our back door if there’s an uncommon bird in the garden or a fox. I prefer to enjoy their company from inside rather than frighten them away.
