It's not for sale, Donald!

So Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland - presumably so that the United States can have a greater presence in the Arctic and also have access to Greenland's mineral resources. However, the people of Greenland have absolutely no wish to be American, so there is no chance of them saying Yes. Greenland is technically part of Denmark, but a self-governing autonomous region. That means that Denmark is in no position to agree to a sale, even if it wanted to. That is why the whole idea is absurd, as the Danish Prime Minister made clear. Other people in Denmark have been saying very similar things. However, Donald is not very happy with the rebuff, and has called the Danish PM "nasty" - just how childish can you get? The problem is that the US President understands nothing about diplomacy and world politcs, but quite a lot about the business of buying and selling. So is there anything about this affair that should really surprise anyone?

@indexer The name-calling and temper tantrum at not getting his own way shows us what the man’s made of.

@Fiacre Not once have I seen Donald Trump throw a temper tantrum. But the left has certainly been in a perpetual temper tantrum ever since the man got elected. You can't even wear a MAGA hat without being called a racist and having your head bashed in. Who's having the tantrum again?

@indexer When you have historic low black and Hispanic unemployment, when you have record low unemployment and record high labor participation rates, when you have a restoration in American manufacturing, when you have increases in the median income across the country, when you have ISIS on the run, when you have North Korea backing down, when you have Israel supported and protected again, when you have effectively reduced independence on foreign oil and allowed oil reserves to be tapped into making us now the world's largest oil producer, and myriad other things... You REELECT that person who was able to accomplish those things.

Why oh why can people NOT ever take a step back from their ridiculous Trump bashing to read a little history? Trump is NOT the first president to want to buy Greenland. Andrew Johnson was the first, and Harry Truman was the last offering $100 million for it. Ugh. This gets sooo tiring.

Not being the first president to do it doesn't mean it's not a pretty stupid thing to try. But I'll happily bash Johnson and Truman too if that makes it more fair.

@porwest But trying to buy something from the Danes that they can't sell is a stupid thing to try. Greenland isn't a territory anymore, it's a country with joint foreign policy and defence with Denmark, so asking the Danish prime minister does show that someone (the president or his councilors) haven't don't their homework.

@Torunn But that's part of the case. It's NOT a stupid thing to try. It makes geopolitical sense, and countries buy territories all the time and always have throughout history. Hong Kong comes to mind, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and there are several others. Those that are not bought are conquered.

He thinks that he can go around and buy lands and countries as he buys his hamburgers at McDonald's. I cannot believe he is so ignorant, he surly lack of diplomacy.

I would have said he knows nothing about anything but that is a bit harsh perhaps.

You'd have to ask Andrew Johnson and Harry Truman how silly an idea it was. They were some other presidents who tried to buy Greenland. Once again, facts do not matter. It's just a constant "let's bash Trump party." Ugh.

Good for Denmark! I totally agree! And yes I am an American saying this. I heard so many wonderful things about Denmark and would hate to see it become Americanized. I would love to move there. I am a quiet, non-problematic American
