An old-style phone box

We went to see Hugh Jackman on Saturday evening and what a performance it was. The dancing and choreography were incredible and, of course, Hugh himself must be really fit to cope with the singing and dancing that he displayed. We are home again now and soon I’ll get around to replying to notifications. The photo shows one of the entrances to Beacon, a small community on the edge of the wheatbelt. There is an old-style public phone box with a sign nearby saying ‘thanks for calling’. Leading to the phone-box is a row of old-style telephone poles. Once, these were common along all the roads but they are not seen so often now. Each pole has been adorned with a cutout bird of some sort. Beacon is the town where they give you a $20 vouched when you book into the caravan park. The park also has excellent showers with plenty of room to hang clothes away from the water. The water was really hot and, although there was a small charge to use the washing machine, the drier was free. I’m sure we’ll go back there one day.

That's a great picture. I love the birds on the telephone poles. Does the phone work? That's great the caravan park gave you a voucher to stay there. It sounds like a wonderful town. I'm glad you enjoyed the Hugh Jackman concert.

Thanks. No, the phone doesn't work. You don't see many public phones around now.

It is a very long time that I do not see those phone poles. We still have those phone-booths, but they have now been converted in small libraries.

@JudyEv I think that only up in some isolated mountain villages they still have the poles. We still have some public phones, but not in the booth, they are in the railways stations or in the post offices.

That would be a good use for them. We still see the poles and phone lines in country areas but I doubt many of them are still in use.

It sounds like a really good place to visit, like they really value your business. I occasionally still see a pay phone here and there.

@judyev Why did so many people (ok, men) get confused between telephone boxes and urinals?

Not being a man, I have no idea. It's a bit like the old joke - What's the difference between an elephant and a letter-box? When the person being addressed eventually gives up, you come out with - Well, I wouldn't send you to post a letter.

Is that a functional phone?? Or just a keepsake for old memories. I thought those to be real birds and not cut outs

Hey that is really good to be able to see an old fashioned phone box and I love the English ones the best as I grew up with them around . Nice to hear that you had a good time there also.

@JudyEv Actually I don´t know about the phone Boxes in England if they work still at the moment but they were a brilliant piece of technology and became an icon across the world.

What a sight, I haven't seen a phone booth in years. A friend of mine still has a land line in her house, that to me is unusual.

how 'xcitin' to see that performance 'f mr. jackman 'n troupe. i'm certain he's quite fit, one'd need to be fer such :) what a treat :) love this ol' phone box. we used to've those here'n the u.s. back'n the day, though 'long the roadways no box - jest a phone hangin' out'n a pole, lol. i reckon they presumed 'twas alright fer ya to use such out'n the weather?? kinda odd, now that i think back'n 't. sounds a great place to be stoppin'. many places here 've shoddy services if'n any 't all ('t least'n these parts - the picnic/rest stops 've no facilities 't all. wonderful to be able to tend yer laundry'n get a nice, hot shower. wonder why the dryer 'twas free? figured they'd charge fer such, too. yes ma'am, i'd be puttin' that'n my list 'f places to go.

Wow, that sounds like a great performance show. I presume, in many places, they replace those cables and draw those under the ground for safety purposes. I assume it's the same here as well. That's a nice photo. How cute it is to have a telephone box there. Thanks for sharing this.
