I had not heard of the Roosevelt bears until my friend lent me a book about them. She had brought this book in an auction as part of a job lot of about sixty books. I was looking through the books that she had and I came across this book and I was immediately drawn to it. So she said that I could borrow it and now I am going to do some more research on these bears. I did see that the book was not originally published in the UK so I thought I would use this opportunity to start a discussion on myLot to see if any of you knew anything about the Roosevelt bears.

I dimly remember seeing this book pass through my hands when I was a second-hand bookseller many years ago. I don't recall ever reading it, though. I believe that it was first published in 1904, which seems to me to be awfully soon after the reported incident in 1902 involving Theodore ("Teddy") Roosevelt which gave rise to the name 'teddy' for toy bears! Some authors are very much on the ball, it seems!
From the blurb on the LibriVox website, I learn that the bears in the story are grown-up bears (not soft toy teddies) named Teddy-B and Teddy-G who have marvellous and exciting adventures as they travel around America.

Here's the history of the Teddy Bear, in case you didn't know about it:

Thank you for the information on these bears. I did wonder if this was a book aimed at children or adults or perhaps both. I see one of the bears is smoking so I assume the book is supposed to be for grown ups. I wonder what a first edition of this book would fetch at auction ?
How long did you work as a secondhand bookseller, did you own your own shop and how did you find your stock?

@owlwings Of course I knew it was a story , but I suppose children`s literature has changed so much since it was originally published. You sound like you had an interesting career as a bookseller, I would have loved to have been able to work with books.

That is what I thought when I first saw it, but when I looked at it closer, I decided it was aimed at grown ups.

@just4him I think I will enjoy reading it because it is very different to the books that I normally read. The story is told in poems and pictures, I enjoy looking at the pictures just as much as reading the text.

Not really sounds familiar though. Life lessons come from everywhere.

@crossbones27 Scooby Doo was my favourite when I was a child. I always got scared until I realised that the plots were the same on every show. These programmes first started in the 1960s and it is nice to see that the characters are still popular today. Only a couple of years ago I was given a greetings card with Scooby Doo on the front of it and it really made me smile. I can still remember the theme tune from the show as it still sounds just as good today.

Yes , you can learn lessons from anywhere in life as long as you wish to learn. You say the Roosevelt Bears sound familiar so perhaps you may have seen them before, or heard other people talking about them.

Yes , it is a fun book and it is the sort of book that I can look at more than once. This is unusual because normally when I have looked through or read a book once, I do not go back to it a second time.

I don`t think it is a rare book, so perhaps you may be able to find a copy of it.
