I'm a Cat Kind of Gal

I won't apologize to anyone and it's a compliment to be called a cat lady. I've had dogs in the past and loved each of them but as I aged and my children grew up not needing babysitters, and as I sought a few adults only hours; I did not want to shorten my time out because the dog had to poop. My last dog passed away in 1996 and I kept cats. They are clean, fluffy, and take themselves potty. I can go to the coast for a day and even overnight and they be fine. On my trip next week, my daughter will feed my Shelby Ann morning and night plus scoup the poop once a day. Care is minimal. A few of my friends have dogs and they can never be more than three hours anywhere or have to take them everywhere. Dogs are great but long as someone else owns them. I'm a cat person and OK with it.

I like dogs and cats too, but prefer cats for they are very low maintenance to care for. Aside of taking them to the vet once a year and feeding them, they are virtually very independent and easy to care for. I love brushing them and they loved it right back. It's fine to have pets in your own place. Now though I live in a no pet apt. which is okay, for no fleas or ticks too. When I start missing having a cat, I go to youtube and watch cat or kitten videos.

I owned my own homes except the last two years in CA. When I sold my house, I lived in my RV and then sold it and moved into an apt. I was lucky to be allowed to have them with me but had to pay a huge deposit.

@oahuwriter They can get expensive at times. The vet I use has two clinic hour days to get shots and basics for $35 so that helps tremendously. Next week is shots, full exam and worming. I get all that for that low price since I'm going on a Sat after 11 am.

@noni1959 Very lucky indeed. Right now budget too tight anyway for me to own pets, but I love cats too. They are so good company and so soft to pet. I watch videos so it's okay. Happy mylotting!

Yes I understand this completely. I had cats for 16 years and it wasn't until 2 years ago I finally wanted a dog. Cats are so much easier to care for. They are very self sufficient compared to dogs who need to be walked and taken out to go the bathroom every few hours.

@noni1959 Yikes I just wouldn't go away at all if I had to pay that much. When my boyfriend and I went on vacation this summer we were able to take our dogs. I wouldn't have gone if not.

@shaggin We are going to Hawaii the end of December for New Years and live in the forest. We have a lot of critters here. My daughter has two dogs, several cats, six horses and a donkey. We are fortunate she is only charging that for all of them. She is going to my little cabin on the property to care for mine as well. When I lived in CA, I had no one to help watch mine so boarded and paid about $450 for almost two weeks to watch my two cats. Short trips I didn't have to.

I always had big dogs so it was even more care. Boarding costs more too. My daughters both have dogs and boarding is a huge expense. This year we got a housesitter/animal care to come in. Still $800 for 6 days!

@crazyhorseladycx My kitty did this when I returned at 1am from my trip. She followed me all over until bed and then in bed she kept getting in my face, jumping on me and meowing. It's only when I leave she gets this way.

I have nothing against dogs, but it's true that dog owners are slaves to their dogs. I have a guy on my team at work that has to go home every day for lunch to let his dog out. So he misses out on all the important team luncheons and other fun things we do midday. I've had friends decline vacation offers or fun weekend trips because they have to take care of their dogs.

@noni1959 Pets can--and often are--dealbreakers in relationships. I always find it interesting when people put more emotions into their pets than they do their significant others.

@moffittjc If one gets a pet after they begin a relationship and that pet gets more emotion than the partner, there is an issue for sure. Going into a relationship with a fur baby already established, one has to accept it or don't get involved.

A friend of mine has a boyfriend with a dog and she's been frustrated with travel. He has to take the dog everywhere and that has been a hindrance to take a cruise and fly places. It can cause issues with relationships. She knew this going in though.

I am a lover of both cats and dogs. It's true dogs need more care but cats are so wonderfully secure in their own personality that you just have to love them.

@HazySue I arrived home last night from my trip and my cat would not leave me a lone and bounced on me all night meowing. She does this when I'm gone a few days. She sticks like glue.

They call me the "Cat Whisperer" noni1959 .I still have 13 of them. 3 litterboxes scooped 5 times a day. My 3 dogs passed away just a few years ago and I didn't have the heart to get another one. Besides I'm the one that feeds 90% of all the dogs in the neighborhood.

All of my animals are outside, I do allow the cat to come inside to eat but he poop/pees outside. I can leave for a couple days and he will catch his food, if need be. The 2 dogs are in the backyard, I can leave them a couple days because I have 5 gallon buckets of water an I have an animal feeder that holds 20 pounds of dry dog food. I had to find a way for them to feed themselves when I had to rush Tony to the e.r. and they would keep him.

I don't allow my cats outside. We have cougar, coyotes, and other predators and there have been rabid bats and raccoons. All mine are vaccinated but still worry. A worry about them catching food is they really don't eat enough. A friend has a barn cat that stays in there catching mice but he puts some food up on a ledge daily as well.

A friend of mine keeps saying I need a lap dog. I asked why since I'm always on the go and would not be able to care for one. She hints at my age.

I used to not be a cat person until I met my wife. She had two of them. I still love dogs, and somewhat prefer them. But the one thing I did love about the cats is that they pretty much took care of themselves. It was especially nice when we went on trips, unless they were extended, we could just leave enough food and water for them and they took care of the rest. We'd put out extra cat litter boxes, but that was about it. They were very self sufficient. My biggest complaint was the shedding. My God, the hair all over the place was annoying.

My cat doesn't shed much at all but my daughter has a long hair that I swear sheds a new cat every day. We brush them but still can find it all over.
