Collecting Coins

I have never really been into coin collecting in a big way, only when I have found old out of date coins in the back of drawers and other hiding places. Then I would put these coins to one side and look at them from time to time. I think the oldest coin I ever owned was a Farthing which was a pre-decimal coin worth a quarter of an old penny. These farthings went out of circulation before I was born. There was also a threepence piece and an old sixpence in my collection.
If you do collect old coins, it is a good idea to read books like the one that I have on my bookshelf. These reference books are published by Spink, who are a well known auction house who deal with coins. The books are published every year to keep the collector up to date with current prices.

@Starkinds That is quite old, can they still be used as normal currency. Our coins get updated regularly and we cannot use the old ones. We have to exchange them at the bank for modern ones.

What are these coins, are they old and worth a lot of money. Where did you get them and how long have you owned them?

How many do you have in your collection, have you and your husband been collectors for long and what started your interest in paper money and coins?

@Janet357 Does your husband send away for his new coins? I know there is a place in the UK where you can order new coins before they come into circulation. Sometimes they bring out coins especially for collectors that cannot be used as normal currency. These sort of coins normally commemorate something like an anniversary or a royal wedding.

It would be a good thing to collect coins, but if I was going to be a serious collector, I do not know where I would start. I suppose I could buy my first collection from an auction where somebody else had collected the coins and then decided to sell them.

old coins cost way more than the value written in the coin, there's a coin that costs 3 million because it's very old and antique.

This is because very old coins can be rare and collectors are willing to pay a lot of money to own them. Do you know any more about the coin that is worth 3 million, what country was it brought in and how old is it?
