Preparing for the future - just in case

About a week ago, we purchased a digital version of a booklet called ‘Just in Case – Think Ahead’. The author, Heidi Wyeth, wrote it after she lost her husband very suddenly. She realised there was a need for a comprehensive guide as to what to do to leave your affairs in some sort of order so that whoever had to deal with your estate could do so with less problems and stress than might otherwise be the case. There are numerous tables and charts to fill in which details all the information the executor of your estate will need. There are extensive lists of the sorts of documents, vital and less so, that you might want to keep together so they’re easily accessible. There are spaces to document your wishes as regards your funeral service, arrangements for your pets, special requests, etc. Having purchased a digital version, information regarding our passwords, account numbers and other details can be safely kept in the document. Now all we have to do is get around to filling in all the details. The photo is my favourite Nepalese photo of Lake Fewa. I haven't been there but Vince took the photo.

It is a practical thing to do which will make it easier for the surviving family member on what to do; saves some arguments, etc.

True - and part of the advice is to have all the documents that will be needed in a folder so they are easy to find.

I love that photo, it's stunning. I don't have any heirs so when I pass this will all go to the government of the state of TX and I really don't care if they any problems, it won't affect me while I live and I'm betting my ghost won't give a hoot.

Actually we're all in the same age group and I'm the healthiest of the bunch @JudyEv Carol has diabetes, Hank has bipolar depression and suffers from war injuries, Linda is diabetic. I'm the only one that doesn't take a lot of medications.

Do you not have a few special bits and pieces that you'd want to give to friends? Of course, that is easily catered for just in a will I guess.

@rebelann For a long time, I hadn't thought about the fact that certain people might die before me but I can understand.

At least we've done all that but we don't have everything in one spot and easy to access. If you don't have a will here, the government takes a big cut out of the estate for starters.

We took care of that years ago, but continually have to make updates and small changes. Everyone should do that.

We've had it done too for ages but what we don't have are the documents all together and readily accessible. Also getting passwords for bank accounts would be tricky for an outsider.

I guess as you get older these things cross your mind more but even for younger people, you never know what can happen.

Its like an unlovable thing to do but we can't evade this. And planning and doing this is certainly one of the best thing to do while we are still alive and aware.

That's our thinking. It's surprising how much red tape you have to go through if you are an executor and it can become quite stressful.

Our Wills have been signed, we have written down what we want that has to be done after we go. I hope I forgot nothing, I still have to be sure that my husband writes down all his passwords, I already did and he knows where they are stored... if he remembers.

@JudyEv My husband does not want to use the "cloud", so our passwords are stored (encrypted) on USB keys that are stored inside our drawer. Everything "online" is never safe, the hackers are very smart in our days.

The passwords are probably the biggest issue in a way but I think ours are 'encrypted' in some way and stored in a 'cloud'. Hopefully they are safe.

And, I have to add, this isn't just for 'old' people - you never know what will happen suddenly. Especially important if you have children, to appoint guardians and avoid their being taken into care!
