What problem would $15,000 USD solve for you?

If someone walked up to you and said "Hey, here's $15,000 but you can only use it for things that you need and not what you want.." What would you use it for?
The number of things you use it for is unlimited but once the $15,000 is gone that's it, it's gone. You can't use it for anything you want, it has to be a necessity.
You can only put a limited amount into savings, and only once can you put it into savings. You can't put the whole $15,000 into savings.
What is one thing that you need right now, that $15,000 would cover?
me?
I could use another mattress and boxspring. I could also use an actual bed instead of it just being on the ground. I'd like it to have storage capacity underneath it, but it's not a need per se.
Hmm. I wouldn't say I need this, but if I had it, I could get rid of one of my fans. So yeah, I guess I'll go ahead and say I need a ceiling fan.
There are some things the house needs, but not necessarily me...
So yeah, I'd put the rest in savings. Having spent, let's say... $1,200 give or take.
What about you?

Do the repairs the truck needs. Get the kids new clothes, replace all my cook wear. and then go to Disney with the kids.

One of the cars is at the point where if it was in another wreck (it's been in like... one, but it's an older car) it will be totaled. They won't repair it because the cost to repair would probably exceed the value.. So yeah, I guess I'd have to save some for that.
I've never been to Disney but want to go one day.

@thislittlepennyearns Would it be just a day trip, or would you rent a hotel room and go two days in a row or something?

There isn't much I need that I don't have. That sum, however, would be enough to put a deposit on a home of my own or pay deposits plus a few other things on a rented place that suits our needs better than our current home.

I think a lot of us would use it towards a new and better home or repairs on the one we have. We could use it for repairs here for sure. I'd like to knock out the shower stall and put in a bath tub in one bathroom.

@ScribbledAdNauseum We were born and raised in the city. I love having stores nearby, but at the same time, I'm over it. I think we're all over it. The lack of parking, rising crime, etc. I'd love a single family home for us, but not too far from Mom's heart doctor (though at 1-2 appointments a year, we can get her there).

@tammys85 Ah I see, so you are in the heart of the city?
Yeah, it would be nice to get you guys away from the city and to a calmer neighborhood. We still have plenty of things within walking distance here, but that might also be the way the neighborhood is situated. We have a park in the neighborhood and the park connects to another main road with businesses like target, kohl's, and shoe carnival within walking distance.

Ah, I like the idea of living more rural. We are in the 'burbs here. That would be a nice goal for sure.

That's a difficult question. Genuinely I NEED nothing more than I already have.
There are very few actual needs in life. I would classify a need as something without which you couldn't survive. Food, shelter and clothing basically. Beyond that pretty much everything is a want. We can convince ourselves we need things but we never actually do need them.

Hmm, you have a point.
However, there are always those pesky things that come up with owning a home. Maybe some of those things can be classified as "wants" (for instance, my ceiling fan is honestly more of a want.), but things like a broken faucet handle in the kitchen would certainly be considered a necessity. I couldn't see myself going to the bathroom to get water to fill the tea kettle, for boiling the veggies etc.

@WorDazza Yep. The days of going to the river to wash clothes, or to a water pump to gather water for the kitchen is long gone. We are more the better for it, atleast in some ways.

But seriously, I take your point. There are any number of things we now need in order to maintain our modern day lifestyle.

Our mattress is 11 years old and kind of too soft, so a new mattress would be a good idea for me too. A bed that adjusts to sitting etc. would help with our various ailments as we age but a want really.
I really don't need anything. Our family is spread over this whole big country, Using money to visit family (Hubby's kids) feels kind of like a need.

Yeah, I would classify using the money to visit people as being a need. I mean, it's a want for sure, but it's also a need.
I was maybe 8 years old when I first saw a chair that was designed to kick people out. My great grandmother bought a chair that would help her stand up. It tilted the person into a sitting position. We had that chair for so long before it broke.

@paigea Yes, but I can also see it being dangerous. I feel like she (the great grandmother) fell out of it once because her feet slid out from under her while the chair was tilting her out.

Houses here are a lot more expensive. That might pay for a tiny home here.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Houses are not expensive here, in fact in rural areas houses are not expensive. I would love a small house with a yard.

I would either get some work done on my house or buy another car..Probably the car, even though mine is good for local travel, I am afraid to take it over the mountains. I don't trust it implictly.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I don't see the point in having two cars..Actually, what I might do is buy a budget car, and get the deck redone. The car isn't really critical, but if I want to sell my house. for big bucks it needs some things done.

Would you be able to trade in towards another car, or would you just have one car for everyday and one for farther travel?

@snowy22315 As long as the car is something that you feel can get you to and from your various mystery shops and to your family further up North, Getting the house ready to be sold would be more important.

Like you, I'd also buy a mattress and a good pillow. We live in a traditional Korean style house. Sleeping on the floor is very uncomfortable. Plus, our memory pillows don't seem to make me comfortable either. We also need a new refrigerator. The remaining amount, I would use it to put a business.

What kind of business would you open up with that money?
I've seen a traditional Japanese style bed that someone on youtube talked a little bit about. I have slept on the floor, but had an airmattress to support me.

@Iam_jauntyjen Oh I see. Going from a soft and comfy bed to a hard one is not fun. I had to go through that for awhile when I moved out of my ex's house.
Ah, food businesses are lucrative. People must eat after all.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I would love on venture on food business.
We have a thin mattress where we sleep on but since I grew up in the Philippines, I am used to sleeping in a soft and thick mattress.

@amitkokiladitya A friend and I were having a conversation about savings the other day. I was talking to her about a money app I had seen that allowed you to save pennies from your checking account and put it into a separate account. My friend said her bank did something similar.
She and her husband were talking one day and he asked her if she wanted to know what was in that account. She said "No, right now i think that there is $200 in there and that's all I need to know." I looked and her and said "Yes, because if you knew there was more you'd want to "borrow" it." We laughed because we are both the same way.
I can be a penny pincher, but if I know I have a lot of money then I am more likely to want to spend it!

The need: have our driveway repaired and re-asphalted. I'm betting that would take care of most of the 15,000. Any leftover would go to our long-term investment accounts.

We could use some gravel at the end of our drive, and I've mentioned taking out one of the trees and cementing a patch in our yard for a vehicle.
I hadn't thought of those.
Yeah, I'd imagine that re-asphalting the drive would be atleast $8,000... I wouldn't think it'd be much below that.

When I would buy a lottery ticket, it would feed my mind with imaginings such as who to share with, what to buy. $15,000 is not much although I can buy a new car.
