What Are They Teaching These Kids?

Little Miss and I were talking and she just asked me if Obama was the president that was shot, I told her that President Lincoln, and President Kennedy were assassinated, that there were attempts on President Reagan’s Life...
She then asked me if John F Kennedy was our current President! Maybe she’s yanking my chain, but I’ve seen her homework they really aren’t teaching much history, a little local history, but really I think they need to be educated on American History and World History. Because honestly if we’d don’t learn from it, they are bound to repeat it.
I think I am going to have to see ways of helping her get a better grasp on history.

Oh, wow! How old is your daughter? It could be due to that... My sister's a 2nd grade teacher and she vents to me sometimes about her pains as a teacher. It's not only up to the education curriculum(teachers) for a child to be aware. I believe that it's also up the parents. So good for you that you at least are having discussions with her about current events, etc. Some parents don't make the time to see where they're children are in their learning&/or understanding of things. You're doing the right thing to help your child with history. I agree about history being bound to be repeated. I feel we all need to be aware.

@Michellekidwell My apologies on assuming. I guess I'm behind on the info on your "little miss". I haven't been keeping up consistently here at MyLot. I call my daughter, "little miss", sometimes as well. In my opinion, 5th grade would be the grade where she should know who's the current president. I can remember mostly to the administration of President Reagan back in 1984, when I was in the 3rd grade(telling my age) . So... I have to agree with you. Schools today do need to do better with the education curriculum. We had current event reports to be done sometimes when I was in the 5th grade. My 16 year old daughter didn't really start doing current event reports until high school.
I feel the current younger teachers today depend more on the internet to guide their students with their school work. In my opinion, this creates more of a dependency on the internet than common sense &/or the books needed to learn a subject. Kids today mostly depend on social media for their current events instead of watching the regular tv for the news, and social media is more likely than not wrong about current events. Very unfortunate situation.

She’s my niece, and She’s in the fifth grade. I’m not her parent but I do help with her homework and try to educate her about things I feel she needs to know about.

Some young students here have the same learning when it comes to history. My impression is the failure of the teacher to make the students understand the lesson.

Sometimes that is the case, sometimes it’s the Curriculum in general...
