Look what our friends have given us

I’ve written about our friends selling up and moving back to the city to be nearer their grandchildren. They will be living in their caravan for around twelve months while their new house is being built. Many items of furniture have had to be given away or sold because they’ll be scaling down and don’t want to put too much into storage. The positive side of this is that they have given us a very lovely china cabinet that they had custom built out of marri (red gum) timber. This is one of our native eucalyptus. It blends in nicely with our current furniture and even with the flooring. I had great fun placing our very best glassware and crystal in the upper cabinets. I love the fact that the glass doors will keep out a lot of the dust. No doubt I’ll be moving more things around from time to time. I promised I’d put a photo of it here when it arrived so here it is.

@TheHorse When Vince stops noticing what is in it, I might fill it with horses.

Haha. I've just put horses in the middle section. They're not quite so tightly packed in the bar area now.

Yes, I'm very lucky. I remember being quite envious when they first bought it. I never imagined I'd end up with it one day.

@JudyEv It was a good job you measured your wall once again.

It does, doesn't it? When it was first offered to us, we took the measurements and measured the wall. We thought it was too long so we measured other walls but didn't have anywhere else to put it. Then we measured our wall and again and found we'd made a mistake and that it would fit after all. I was so relieved.

That's really lovely! And it does NOT need my services. You already answered my obvious question. I didn't know that eucalyptus could have such interesting grain.

@JudyEv Do they love it even after it's been burned? Does their love for it mean one should not build a house out of marri?

@TheHorse I shouldn't think it would be a good idea to build from marri. I haven't heard of any marri houses. They do put a barrier round the foundations which is supposed to keep the white ants at bay.

Marri is popular as a furniture timber. It burns well but leaves a lot of ash and the white ants (termites) love it.

When I first measured the wall, I thought it would poke out about 4 inches. When we couldn't find anywhere else for it, we went back and we'd measured the wall wrongly. As you say, it does look custom built for the space. Thanks.

Don't tell anyone but I had to space the crystal out so it filled up the shelf. Maybe it would be better being used to store all my Tupperware. I have more of that.

@FayeHazel I had trouble getting a decent photo of the cabinet as there were too many reflections. And I think the setting might be a bit skewiff as the painting is out of focus. So many words just to say I think it is the photo at fault rather than your eyesight!

Nice cabinet indeed looks like the previous owners took great care of that cabinet that I do not see discoloration in the design or any damage from termites and other things that could deteriorate from it.
