I was really expecting that my aquarium is doing well already until yesterday when I came home from work that I saw my fish not swimming normally and looks like they were dizzy and gasping for breath. I checked everything and all was functioning normally. My filters were working aeration was doing good the water was crystal clear. One thing I noticed I left the CO2 wide open that it pump in more of it in my tank than it should be. I immediately closed it and after several hours co2 levels slowly normalized and my swordtails were fine and one danio had recovered. Unfortunately it took its toll on my neon tetras They were not able to survive it and died.. One danio looks affected as well as she has become slow sluggish so for now I think I will have space for new fish to add to replaced those that perished. I think I need to become more watchful now for this lesson learned.

I thought the pump was for oxygen. I think carbon dioxide is good for the plants but poisonous to animals that includes fish.

@Alexandoy I wish I have one to look over it while I am at work but we are all out of the house during days. My wif/son would usually Be yhe first to arrive but they don’t check on it. I taught her to look for any signs of distress report to me but she’s not around to do it.

@rsa101 it is normal to forget things like turning off a switch so you should have someone to check on that every time. I sometimes leave the AVR of my computer and our housemaid would turn it off when I am gone.

I think I am getting used to it already. With the size of my tank water parameters can easily change and become undetected. It may look so pristine and clean but there are other unseen chemicals that can be dangerous to the fish and plants.

Anything we raise and hold dear shouldn't be neglected. That's what I learned when I become careless and negligent.

Yeah everything was doing smooth the past weeks that is why I went off guard thinking nothing is going bad on my tank. I never realised that one small detail of turning the CO2 off would have a significant effect on the fish. Although I was aware of it but it never occured to me that it would happen on my tank since when I left them they were really actively swimming around and happily doing their own thing.

I never had co2 pumped into my tank, I always thought that fish and plant was enough to create an eco-balance. Btw I don't have aquatic plants in our aquarium, only in our fishpond that was built from an old antique bath tub

Actually I lose three of them. It was sad for me to see them go but I guess I learned some lesson on this one to be careful next time. Anyway to move on I decided to buy another set of fish this time I see to it that they are hardy fish so they won't be easily affected when I forget something. But nevertheless I am now careful checking the CO2 valve switched off before I leave them.

Definitely I learned something after a few months of no deaths I thought I have already learned everything the fish needs in my tank but I neglected to watch for the signs it has in my tank. Now I am slowly regulating the injection of CO2 in my tank and monitoring it. This is I think part of the hobby you win some and lose some in the hobby.
