Trash Talk No Matter The Game

Whether it's a game or sport with thousands of spectators, a college sport, high school game, a neighborhood contest, or a simple card game at the dining room table, there doesn't seem to be any shortage of trash talk.
Gone are the days of friendly competition. In fact, I believe that the term 'friendly competition' has become an oxy moron.
Last week we were visiting family. The kids started playing a card game and the smack talk; trash talk began.
I was reminded why I don't even want to waste time playing even a silly card game. I can't stand the smack.

Neither can I. Today on social media, there was a guy who apparently thought it would be funny to embarrass not only the team who lost the game but their fans as well.
Even though I don't care for the team at all, I was not the least bit amused by this guy's immaturity. I think there are people who refuse to grow up.

@LadyDuck How very true that is. I have seen news reports of parents fighting with each other at little league games. The children just want to play the game and have fun but it's the parentsthat were fighting.

@betlynfrnds Too many refuse to grow up, they do childish things that are not at all correct.

Yep, I'm afraid so. A few years ago I was sitting in a friend's living room with some of my buddies. It was football season so the conversation was about teams, players and so on. All of our talk was impartial with no hint of favoritism or nastiness that is so common. It was truly a friendly, general conversation.
One of the kids, who was about 8 years old at the time, started with this repulsive, 'in your face' stupidness. I think I remember looking at him thinking to myself, "are you kidding me?"
Before I had a chance to say anything to the brat, his father told him to stop, which he did. That was fine by me, I was in no mood for his nonsense.

@RebeccasFarm Thank you. I must admit that I was somewhat disappointed by what I heard. I really think that this sort of thing goes on almost everywhere.

@betlynfrnds I know. It happens all over the place. Very sad when it happens in front of innocent children.

@amitkokiladitya It's really sad. On our ROKU device, I found a station that shows college sports. These colleges are not the major schools but the smaller ones. Sometimes it's pleasant to see sports from these smaller schools. It seems like the athletes are not the spoiled, insecure kids that you so often see in the bigger schools and universities.

I may be able to sum that up in one word: Attitude. Some people are very insecure with themselves and have nothing better to do than to put others down to make themselves feel better. Then I suppose there are others who have a mean streak in them.

@betlynfrnds That's it. You hit the mark. But attitude has two types, the good and the bad.

@Nakitakona Yes, I agree. It is the good attitudes that I would love to see much more of.

We do this in collegiate football but within the SEC it is usually between friends and it is all in fun. As long as all know that, then it can remain friendly. I know what you are talking about...off the deep end and yes, there is plenty of that happening in today's world. But look at the world. They want to legalize abortion up to the day of birth. That is immoral and murder. And one party wants the US to become a communist nation. Our country and the world over is in TROUBLE.

Good for you Valerie. I can't allow language or stupid attitudes in my space no matter where I am. This nonsense was going on at the home where the kids live. When my husband was ready to go outside for a nice walk, I was more than ready to go with him. The timing was great because by the time we got back the 'game' was over.

Yes it is. When my niece was about 8 years old, she played on a pee wee softball league. Her father ( my brother ) was the coach of the team.
I remember talking with her about it and asking questions, showing my interest and enthusiasm. I did all of this in a nice way and not with a spirit of competition.
I'll never forget what my niece said to me. She told me that they just play for fun and they don't keep score. For fun! They don't keep score! That was and still is one of the most refreshing things I have ever heard about the subject of sports and games.
Anybody who plays for fun and doesn't keep score is a winner in my book.

@JudyEv That's absolutely true which is most likely the reason why I cherished that very moment because I had a very good feeling that it was going to be a rare moment.

@betlynfrnds It's a pity more don't do this. It seems everything these days has to be about competition.

Some can't resist rubbing it in when winning taking it too far. They like to measure themselves against their opponent but find some strange pleasure in putting them down with insults. They need to remember sportsmanship is part of every competition and treating others with respect makes you a better winner and person.

@dgobucks226 That's very well put DB. I couldn't agree with you more. Once in a while I'll pull up an old game on youtube; baseball, soccer, basketball or whatever.
I can say for sure that things have changed for the worse over the years. It really takes away from the game when players feel a need to throw their attitude around.
In this particular instance with the kids and the card game, it wasn't even a matter of winning. The trash talker wasn't even winning. It all boiled down to a big mouth full of hot air.

@dgobucks226 Thank you. I thought it was interesting to see the contrast. Some spectators may not even notice unless they did what I did and made a fair comparison between now and then.
