White Pelicans Returning to Baton Rouge

Every year residents in Baton Rouge await the arrival of the white pelicans on City Park Lake. These birds have made this their winter home for as long as I can remember. They are large and majestic birds. The photo was sent to me by one of my daughters. She lives close to LSU and was able to witness their return this year. The pelicans are in flight and whirly down to the lakes to make their landing. It is a pretty neat site to observe. If you look closely at the photo you will see that there are a lot of birds in that flock. I'll have to look around and see if I can find a photo of the pelicans swimming on the lakes in downtown Baton Rouge and the LSU area. Have you ever seen a white pelican? Photo Credit: Christina Gros

I'd love to but it's a heck of a long drive to get there @kareng It's 700 miles to Houston and it looks like at least 800 to Louisiana and I don't fly, planes scare the heck outta me.

I saw them coming down to land one year. It is like a wind tunnel. So neat! We have brown pelicans here that are native to the area. The white ones leave though when it warms up.

@kareng I've never seen brown ones. Have you this seen this photo of them 'dancing'? Someone was feeding them fish but they all turned the same way at the same time.

Impressive photo! I've seen brown pelicans on the Pacific coast of Mexico. They would swoop down and fly just above the water, skimming the surface with their wings. Wonderful sight.

Yes, they are very beautiful. The wing span is about four feet wide too. Huge!

@WorDazza They could have been skimming to see how much food was there.

@kareng We didn't realise they were pelicans at first because they were so big close up.

We have them here. My misfortune is that I didn't have my camera when I saw one up close.

Never seen them but it sounds very cool. So are these birds that fly away for the winter like most others do?

You would be surprised at how many people keep an eye out for their return. I managed to get some great shots of them when I was working and we used one on our School magazine cover.

@kareng They are prettier than the buzzards that I watch for every spring. But when I finally see one of them I know the weather will start staying above freezing a lot more.

We have white and brown pelicans in our backyard. They are very sweet. One was resting on a bench and let me sit next to it.
