So here we are, on the eve of a new year and a new decade - 31-Dec-2019 rolls over to 01-Jan-2020. Fireworks for many, perhaps a dash of sparkling wine (prosecco or cava or champagne, depending on your budget), and hopefully no headache on the morning of January 1st, when you actually rise to start the new decade. Some will have spent the evening out in the elements: the homeless, not by choice, and the revellers - if you should perchance encounter a small huddle of clothing on a doorstep this evening, reach into your heart and do what you think is right for that less-fortunate member of society. Happiness and health to all who read this, may your 2020 be good for you and those around you. Happy New Year.

It is controversy if the new decade is the next one or 2021, but let's celebrate the end of 2019 and let's hope for a good "Leap Year". According to Italian superstition leaps years are not the best, wait and see.

@pgntwo For Italians the Leap Years are not considered "lucky years", I do not know from where this superstition comes and I am going to research.

@LadyDuck I look forward to hearing what your findings are, when you get a solid answer.

Yeah, one extra day in which events can happen, good or bad

@pgntwo Can I stick to whiskey? Bubbles guarantee a headache for me. Tonight will certainly not be a night for sleeping on doorsteps if this morning’s frozen loveliness is anything to go by. Celebrate well (and responsibly).

The Teutonic tradition is Sekt, the Irish, a measure of whiskey - I may partake of a snifter of each, the Irish before retiring, the Teutonic a little earlier

@pgntwo I think a snifter for each time zone as the new year creeps over the world might be appropriate. Don’t want to leave anyone out.

@MALUSE As it turned out, the Sekt was retained for New Year's Day dinner, and 2020 was welcomed in with a single snifter of Oban, 14-yr old single malt Scotch whisky. Sipped slowly, and never on ice, a pleasant warming to the cockles, sans belch.
