Going off the subject.

I am always amused about how easy it is to get away from the original subject of a discussion when chatting on myLot. I have noticed this when starting my own discussions and making comments on other peoples discussions. Have you noticed this too, and what is the strangest subject you got on to while discussing something else?

All the time! Sometimes we end up chatting about something that bears no resemblance to the original discussion. That's what I love about MyLot. It's acceptable to go off topic unlike many other sites .. at least I think it is!

@lazydaizee I do too and nobody has said anything to me. I don't live that far from you. I'm in Wiltshire and used to visit Reading occasionally.

@myklj999 Wow, that was a lot to earn in one day, it would normally take me weeks to earn that amount.Would you care to share the subject of the discussion with us?

It doesn't happen so much on myLot but it certainly does in real life. I think it's a sign of an interesting person/conversation that can naturally go from one thing to something seemingly unrelated without anyone noticing. I remember one conversation in which we were talking about black holes - my youngest son somehow equated that to explaining male pregnancy. That was just a random comment from him, though, rather than due to progression of the conversation. Conversations with my husband and eldest son can start off with something as simple as whose turn it is to wash the dishes and end up a deep discussion about life, the universe, and everything. I can't really think of specific examples but I do often find myself trying to figure out how we got from one subject to another. Sometimes it is also an effort to turn the conversation back to the original subject when that's necessary - like when I've asked what they want for dinner and I'm still waiting for an answer after the subject has changed 14 times.

@lazydaizee We do talk a lot! Well, my husband, eldest son, and I talk a lot. Youngest son doesn't interact much if he doesn't have to! I'm usually the one on my 'phone but I can multitask We rarely have guests but I do expect people to be polite on the rare occasion we have visitors. I hate going to other people's homes where they have the TV on constantly. The usual answer when asked what they want for dinner is "don't mind"

@pumpkinjam It is hard to have a conversation with somebody who is watching the TV. It is also hard to speak on a landline phone if the TV is on in the same room. We visited some friends who were watching a film when we got there and they would not speak to us until the film ended. So we just sat there politely watching the film with them until it ended. This was boring for us because we did not know what the film was about having missed the start of it.

It sounds as if you talk a lot in your house, and this is a good thing these days. I have visited the homes of family and friends where certain members of the family are too busy on their phones to even say `hello'. Although this is mainly the younger members of the family. What did they want for dinner by the way?

@lazydaizee @lazydaizee Some have also said that a picture they may post does not go along with the post itself.

I have noticed this too. Perhaps the person starting the discussion did not have an appropriate photo so they posted another one .

@Hannihar It is not always possible to have a camera or phone with you when something happens. When things happen to me I often think `I wish I could have taken a picture of that' ,but whatever happened did so quickly that there was not time to take a photo.

I don't think it does anybody any harm, although it could be annoying for the person who started the discussion if they really felt like it was important to speak about that particular subject.

I suppose it is best to stick to the original subject if you can.
